Show Gardiner Found Guilty. COLUMBUS, N. M., Aug. 7. Lewis O. Gardiner, a private of the First New Mexico infantry, today was found guilty on a charge of failing to subscribe to the federal oath which would muster him Into the service of the United States with Ills company June 14 last, after a trial before a general court-martial here. The verdict, ver-dict, together with the recommendations of the board, which were not made public, pub-lic, was forwarded to the secretary of war by L-ieuVmant Colonel George E. Stoekle, president. Through his attorney. Captain John C. Watson, Gardiner made a plea for clemency, clem-ency, but declined to reconsider hia refusal re-fusal to take the oath. Major Blanter Winship, representing the government, argued that if Gardiner was allowed to go free the case might have a bad effect upon future national guard enlistments. |
