Show III JOHG IS W OFFICER Well-known Boxer Is Seriously Seri-ously Wounded in Altercation Alter-cation at Lagoon. Special to The Tribune. FARMIXGTON, July 15. Jimmie Johns, professional boxer, was seriously injured from four bullets fired by the Farmington city marshal at Lagoon tonight, to-night, and City Marshal Horace Van Fleet and Sheriff E. O. Reading were painfully bruised as the result of an altercation al-tercation with twenty young men whom they arrested at the Lagoon resort. The injuries to Johns are considered serious. Four bullets hit him, one entering en-tering his abdomen, another his right thigh and two others causing flesh wounds on either leg. He was sent to the Dee hospital at Ogden. The injuries to the two arresting officers offi-cers are not considered serious, although al-though both were badly hurt from stones and bruises about the body and face in a fistic altercation. The trouble arose when Sheriff Reading Read-ing arrested the twenty young meu on a charge of disorderly conduct in the Lagoon dance hall. The men resisted arrest and on their way to the Farmington Farm-ington jail are said to have assaulted Sheriff Reading. Seeing the county officer handicapped, handi-capped, Marshal Van Fleet went to his rescue and relieved him of the duty of taking the men from the Lagoon gate to the Farmington jail. On the way uilford Collie of A est Ogden, one of his charges, is said to have hurled a brick which hit him in the head. The marshal did not shoot at first, but ordered or-dered the man back, threatening to fire if thev did not obey. Johns i then said to have grabbed the marshal by the hair and Van Fleet fired four 'shots at the boxer. By this time a number of persons had arrived on the scene, and with their aid the party was taken to tho jail. Johns was placed on an interurban and rushed to the Dee hospital at Ogden. The shooting occurred at 1 1 :Hb o 'clock. Johns, the victim, is well knov.'n in the local boxing world. He lias frequently appeared in boxing contests here. |
