Show BIG REGISTRATIONS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS More Than 5000 Pupils Attend At-tend on Opening Day ; More Expected. Special to The Tribune. OGDEN, Sept. 7. More than' 5000 children of the city put the pleasures of t he summer vacation belling them for the tasks of the 1915-16 school year when the Ogden City public schools were opened today. fn usually heavy registrations for the opening were noted in the grade schools and junior high schools of the city, according to reports received by Superintendent John M . I M ills late this afternoon, it being es-j es-j timatod that approximately 5500 students stu-dents will be ready for class sessions tomorrow morning. As in former years, the opening day registration at the Ogden senior high school was not heavy. Not a few of the new students received by this institution in-stitution come from the country districts, dis-tricts, and it is not possible for these to enter upon the year's school work until after the harvest season. Superintendent Super-intendent Mills met with all of the principals at the school headquarters this afternoon and received reports from every part of the city. In some sections sec-tions the registration was so heavy because be-cause of increased school attendance that the teaching forces were nearly swamped. The recent census shows that Ogden has a school population of 8292, including includ-ing the public and private schools, and a registration of approximately 5500 for the opening day is considered by Superintendent Su-perintendent Mills a good showing. The total enrollment at the end of the last school, year was 5350. indicating that before raanv weeks the 1935-16 "enrollment "enroll-ment will be equal to that of last year. Because of the change from the elective elect-ive system to the prescribed courses of study in the senior high school, students re-entering that institution are being required to make their previous courses conform as closely as possible to one of the five courses prescribed bv the board of education . New students entering the senior schools this vcar are permitted permit-ted to deviate but slight h- from the proscribed courses, nearly all uf which ha o some elective features. |
