Show SHUT RESOLUTIONS GALL FOR COMIEI Veterans Discuss G. A. R. Post. Action Relating to Ul-j Ul-j lerunces on Pensions. Resolutions recently adopted by the Maxwell-McLean G. A. R. post, of this city, expressing the conildenee of the veterans vet-erans In United States Senator Reed Smoot and exonerating him from the quotation attributed to him, that a pensioner pen-sioner was but a step removed from the workhouse, are the occasion of eonsldeia-ble eonsldeia-ble comment among the old f.olriiera.- The resolutions were drawn by f'olonel M. M ICulghn, receiver of the Tolled Slates land office, after he hud received a letter from Senator Smoot explaining tho position posi-tion alleged to have been taken by the senator. In adopting the resolutions, the veterans vet-erans proceeded on the theory that Senator Sena-tor Smoot had been misquoted. It was urged in his behalf that the statement attributed to Senator Smoot was contained con-tained in a "garbled account of u speech delivered at Ogden." Folland. county chairman of the Republican party and official stenographer stenogra-pher of the Third district court, was the stenographer who reported tho speech. Senator Smoot was quoted as disparaging dis-paraging Gov. Woodrow Wilson. Governor Wilson's unlUness for the presidency. Continuing. Smoot Is quoted as saying that the difference between applying for a pension and going to the workhouse was only one of degree. In his explanation to Colonel Knlghn. Senator Smoot said he did not mean the statement to apply to old soldiers, saying say-ing that he would not object to President Wiison's receiving a pension from Princeton, Prince-ton, but Mid not think it wn.s proper for him to be pensioned by Mr. Carnegie. This explanation was accepted by Colonel Colo-nel lOilghn und the, resolutions were adopted by the post. |
