The designs uow linishcd aro an olaboratiou upon rough drawings laid before the commissioners recently. ?md show the proposition in detail. Tile commissioners now have the mattor under consideration, and will ae.t thereupon at an early date. Commissioner Commis-sioner Tlenry W. La-wrenec has the designs as "head of the financial department. de-partment. Benefits Apparent It is argued by those iu favor of the project that it "would prove of groat value to tho city. Other cities have established a public auditorium uud.u public market, cither separately or in combination, to meet demands that ariso daily iu ovcry growing eity, and have found the scheme to work out to groat practical value. In tho illustration accompanying is shown a, front elevation of the proposed pro-posed auditorium and market. The building will be 35"0 feet long, running run-ning cast and west, and 20 foot wido, running uorth and south. On the north Bide the buildiug will bo froutcd by a beautiful park, with handslaud or fountain in the contor. On the west, cud of the auditorium rroiiml will bo pergolas, running from Ihn sidewalk to tho building, open both sides, mission style, allowing a shelter shel-ter for the children and sojourners i:i tho. park a place for their luuch or refuce in storms. Oo the south side of tho bmldimr. immediatolv on tho sidewalk line will be the stalls for the markctmen and dealer?. Both sides of the buildiug will be ornate and beautifully designed a3 the drawing shows. j Large Auditorium. The auditorium proper will be 050 feet long aud 150 feet wide, with a stage in the end fifty feet deep and 100 feet wide, the largest stage iu the west, allowing plenty of room for immense gatherings, spectacles, grand operas, etc. A balcony will run around the auditorium, au-ditorium, uudcr which, on tho south tide, will bo tbc market stalls, while under tho balcouy on tho north side will be tlie auteroonts, banquot rooms, promcuades, etc. There will be committee com-mittee and cloak rooms at each cud. Ample provision is mudo for exits aud entrances. Tbc cost will run between $150,000 and $250,000, according to material, and finishing, the plana having bcon drawn on an" alternative basis, that is, in places certain substitution of materials ma-terials may be made. The seating capacity ca-pacity will be approximately .12,000, while hundreds more can bo accommodated accom-modated if desired. The roof -will be Htipporlcd on im-menso im-menso trusses, giving tho couter of the auditorium a complete unrestricted unrestrict-ed view. The idea of Minor & Young in designing de-signing this building is to furnish a combined auditorium and marketplace, a building that will be au ornament and fill a much needed nocessity in the way of a market place. Such a building would not alone remove any antatroni.sm as to its proposed location on Pioneer square, or any pnblic .sauare, but it would prove a valuablo nddition to any part of the citv and "'otild result in greatly increased real-tv real-tv values. |
