Show GUARDS HQLD TARGET PRACTIGEAT BEACH Big Guns Fired From Saltair Waterfront; Range Is 1500 Feet. One of the most Interesting demonstrations dem-onstrations held at Saltair in many years was tho target practice and salute firing by the battery boys of the National Guard yesterday. The first battery, field artillery, held tho annual outing, which was attended by Governor Spry and slat'f. The four big guns of tho battery hud been taken to the beach in tho morning morn-ing and when the afternoon crowds arrived ar-rived the pavilion resembled a regular government fortress. The guns were positioned po-sitioned on the water front between the main pavilion and the Ship cafe on the main floor. The target was placed out In the lake at a range of lollO yards and one of the prettiest demonstrations of target firing ever soen In the state was given by the guardsmen. Captain Webb was In command and under un-der his direction the work wacs carried out. Time after time the battery boys struck the target and were highly complimented compli-mented upon their effective work. In all, twonty-rlve rounds of ammunition" were fired, the shells being of the ten-pound tvno. The concussion from the guns sent a vibration through the pavilion, but the strength of the structure was fully demonstrated demon-strated by tho manner in which It withstood with-stood the heavy firing At 6 o'clock the bnnquet was served In the Ship cafe. The military decorations decora-tions and the bright uniforms of the officers of-ficers and men presented a pretty picture, and drew forth comment from the patrons of the cafe. Governor Spry and staff wero guests 'at the banquet. At 9 o'clock a series of salutes wero fired and demonstrations demon-strations given in range finding and regular regu-lar drill work. A large crowd of spectators specta-tors witnessed both demonstrations. |
