Show DEATH SHB ITEDFliCII Henri Rochefort, Long Prominent Promi-nent in Affairs of France, Passes Away. AIX-LES-BAINS, France, July 1. Henri Rochefort, for many years prominent prom-inent in French political life, died here today from a complication of maladies at the apo of 83. The real name of Henri Rochefort was the Marquis Victor Henri de Rocliefort-Lucay. He was the son of Marquis Louis Maria do Rochefort-Lucay, Rochefort-Lucay, who was a most successful author au-thor of light plays. Henri Rochefort was a Parisian of the Parisians, as he was born in the French capital and passed tho greater part of his life there. He took part, in its defense against the Prussians in 3870-71 as a member of tho government govern-ment and national defense, and at other times worked, as a municipal official, offi-cial, as- a deputy, 'as a ,iorimlist aud as a plaj'wright. His ardent patriotism often led him to oxceH6es of expression of his opinions opin-ions and brought him into conflict with the law, Tn 1871 ho was condemned to deportation aud was transported to Noumes in New Caledonia, when he, with soveral companions in captivity, managed to escape in 187-1 and to board an American vbssel, which brought him and his comrades to San Francisco. Ho remained there some time before returning to Europe. Ho was, however, unable to re-enter Franco until tho issue of the general amuesty in 1SS0. Soon after ho became a deputy, but resigned in 188G, lie then took up the cause of General Bonlangcr, for which he was brought before tho courts and condemned by default to perpetual dctontion in a fortress. lie, however, escaped to London, where he remained until another amnosty permitted his return re-turn in 1895, after which he wrote almost al-most daily for the ultra-patriotic Patrio. |
