It also facilitates the distribution of merchandise, both wholesale and retail, and from a number of important points in thc middle west and northwest come "reports' of expand In operations. Contracts havo been placed ly the car companies for about fiO.OOO tons of nlatcs and shapes for second and third quarters and In tho central west a scarcity of plates for early shipments has developed. Tin plate and sheet mills are booked almost to capacity, and in wire goods more activity Ik noted. While the demand for cotton goods is somewhat less pronounced, the market rules firm and fnrther advances have boon made In a number of linos.
