Show WYOMING OIL HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED Tho Lander and Pa.lt Creek oil fields of Wyoming are tho subject, of a bulletin bulle-tin No. 452 which hus just been reissued reis-sued by the United States geological survey. sur-vey. Oil was discovered in this field by Bonneville in 1833. but until 1867 it was practically unknown except to hunters and trappers. The llrst drilling was done in 18S3, and although the wells were productive they were, on account of keen competition, soon abandoned. For sonic time tho wells remained packed, but the oil that flowed from them through leaks was utillzf-d to some extent ex-tent by the ranchers for miles around as a lubricant and by the gold mines and flour mills for steam making. Recently Re-cently operations at the wells have been resumed on a more extensive scale. The oil is adapted to several uses. It forms an excellent fuel, comparing favorably fav-orably with, the Texas or California oils, and is now employed for that purpose In practically all the development work In the' Little Popo Aglc district of these fields. Some of it can be used in Its raw state as a lubricant, though in general gen-eral It is not suitable for that purpose. As tho oil contains a heavy asphalt base It is good for oiling roads. Perhaps the most interesting well in the Salt Creek oil Held is one drilled in 1910. which struck oil under pressure in shale at a depth of 1176 feet. This well yielded an unusually large amount of oil for a shale well. Bulletin 452, which contains descriptions of tho geology and of the producing wells in the region, mav be obtained free on application to the director of Ihe geological survey, Washington, TJ. C.
