The project M lias been financed, according to the In- H formation given out, and necessary co- Bh operation on tho part of the government H has boon secured. HA To Dam Snake River. H "Our enterprise Is a great one," said '&H Mr. Perrine at the Hotel Utah bust oven- 99 Ing. "In tho flrst place, we propose to HM erect a big darn across the Snake river tHS at American Falls which will Impound HM and conserve the spring flood waters of 99 that great stream In a natural reservoir 99 that will extend from American Falls 1B9 nearly lo Blackfoot, and which will make 92 a lake covering GC.00O acres of ground. 99 "We intend to utilize the natural bed B9 and stroam of the Snake river to convey 99 theao resorvolred waters to the dam at fB9 Mllner, at which point are tlie present 99 Intakes of thn north and south canals IBB in the grat Twin Falls Irrigation 919 project. The south canal of this project 99 runs out west from Jlllner to near the 9H western edgo of Twin Falls county, turn- 1MB ing north nt tho town 'of Cephas, It Is 99 at this latter point that we proposo to 9f9 begin our now cxtoiiKlon. which is to 99 1-10 miles long and to run out over an . 99 immense acrcugo In Owyhee counts'. 9 Includes Immense Area. 99 "This extension will Irrigate 600,000 B acres of good ground that at present 919 lies Id! o for want of waUr. In the dls- 9fl9 trlct covered by the north canal, already BI9 In commission, the acreage nerved Is B9 210,000 acres. The south canal, which 99 ulso Is In service, brings Into agrlcul- '919 turul use '220,000 lucres mora of ground. Hl9 The Bruneau extension, which wo will ffl9 soon proceed to build, will bring under SW cultivation 000,000 acres moro of good 99 land. Under the entire Tivln Falls 919 project, as now In operation and to bo (9n in service wheu the oxtonsiou shall be .199 comploted, a. total of l.fl'iO.OOo acres will w2 yield agricultural products for the state I99 of Idaho. B9h "Unless one should take the trouble, 999 and the pleasure, to look over that vast 919 u area, he can scarcely rcallza the fact (Sultl that It constitutes practically an agrl- wlBl cultural empire that is being added to "i99 j the productive acreage of tho United M gLa "It will cost us $22,000,000 to build this II 9f big dam and reservoir and tho conduit 9 9 u extension from Ccplias to tlie Biunnau W Jt river; but wc deem that the money will 99 bc well expended, inasmuch as it will (99 2 add an linmunsc area to our farm land:. (92 R Tho Twin Fulls project In Itself Is a 199 proiltablc Investment, and we have no 92S (Continued on Page Two.) HMf MILLIONS TO DE SPENT 1 PROJECT (Continued From Pago One.) doubt whatever that our extension will provo to be rjuito as valuablo and productive pro-ductive of profit. Conduit of Concrete. "Jn order to carry all tho water, less natural evaporation by aotlon of the sun, out on to the ground wo propose to reclaim re-claim in Twin Falls and Owyhee counties, coun-ties, we shall construct the conduit of concrete and lino It with cement. This will prevent loss of water by seepage, which would be a considerable Item in a distance of 110 milos. In fact, without a concrote and cement lining in the canal wc would likely lose all our water bofore the end of the great course had beon reached. As It is we propose to deliver de-liver at the outlet approximately 75 per cent of the water sent Into the cxtcn-Bion cxtcn-Bion at the Cephas intake. "We have boon working on this enterprise en-terprise for a long time, having as a valuablo valu-ablo associate In tho matter A. C. Milner of Salt Lake. "I want to indicate to Salt Lake people how the Twin Falls Irrigation project has built up a great community In Idaho. We took an area of sagebrush ground In hand nnd built on it the town of Twin Falls. Wo have there now a population of about 7500. Wo have paved streets nnd sidewalks, a sewer system, a waterworks wa-terworks system, electric lights and electric elec-tric street pars, with a twelve-mile electric elec-tric trolley lino loop now graded out to Shoshone Falls and back, and which will bo In operation this year. "That our progress is not altogether along material lines is shown in the fact that we are developing a splendid public school system. Six years ago we built a school house costing $.15,000. Three years afterwards wc constructed another costing us $05,000. Wc are Just about completing a third school building that will cost us altogether the yum of $150,000. "But we arc not nil business, for we desire some amusement occasionally. While here In Salt Lake 1 have taken a hurried look ovor some of your new theater buildings. We arc going to erect a new theater at Twin Falls. For this purposo we stand ready to spend $125,000. tho people nnd the money awaiting only the selection of plans. We are going to have a first-class house, and propose to have It ready for next winter's show business If possible. Fruit Industry Thriving. "Another thing we- are doing up there Is to bring out the fruit Industry. This year we will plant more than .100.000 fruit trees. Wc have more than 10.000 acres cultivated to fruit, four-fifths of the ground being devoted to apple culture. cul-ture. Our trees vary In age. from bearing bear-ing maturity along the line to those that arc being planted at the present time. In the end we expect to have one of the greatest fruit producing regions In the country, as conditions are especially favorable fa-vorable to some varieties of fruit. "Out of last year's crop of hay, too. wo have already shipped out 1000 airloads air-loads of baled feed, and wc are not through shipping yet. The Oregon Short Line Is building main lines and branches to tap our productive new country, and we are supplying" to that carrier an Immense Im-mense tonnage that will be increased with every year Indefinitely. "At Twin Falls we have the biggest electric flour mil In the state of Idaho, with a capacity of 100 barrels per day. It is one of tho most modern concerns of that character in the country," Mr. Perrlne. accompanied by Mr. Brown, left here last night for Idaho. Within ten days or two weeks, however, how-ever, Mr. Perrlne expects to again visit Washington. D. C In the Interest of the Bruneau extension. |
