Show ANTHRACITE OUTPUT LARGER LAST YEAR The combined production of anthracite and bituminous coal in Pennsylvania amounted in 1912 to 24C.227.0SC short tons, valued at $3-16.903.123. against 235,-21S.230 235,-21S.230 tons, valued at $321,537,250. In 1911, according to E. W. Parker of the United States geological survey, who compiled the figures in co-operation with the State Topographic and Geologic Survey Sur-vey commission. The Increase In quantity quan-tity was 11.00S.S56 short tons, or 4.7 per cent, and the gain In value. S25.155.S73, or 7.9 per cent. In 1911 the larger percentage per-centage of Increase In valuo was due to an lncreaso In the production of anthracite anthra-cite and a decrease In the output of the lower-priced soft coal. The total quan-titj' quan-titj' of bituminous coal produced In the state n 1912 was 161.S65.-1SS short tons, valued at 160.370,497. and that of anthracite coal S4.361.59S short tons, valued val-ued at $177,622,626. In 1912 both anthracite and bituminous bitumi-nous values were Increased In larger ratio than the Increase in tonnage. On account of the suspension of operations on April 1 the production of anthracite In 1913 was less than In 1911 by 5,HS,C33 long tons in quantity and by $2,670,021 In value. The nroductlon of bituminous coal, on tho other hand. Increased li,-304.231 li,-304.231 short terns In ciuanlty and $23,-215.545 $23,-215.545 In value. The average value per ton increased for both grades, anthracite anthra-cite from 52.17 to $2.36 per long ton and bituminous coal from $1.01 to $1.05 per short ton. The production of bituminous coal in Pennsylvania In 1912 exceeded that of anthracite 'by 77,503,890 short tons, or 93 per cent, but the value of the latter exceeded that of the former by $S, 252, 129. A somewhat unusual comparison Is presented In the statistics covering the labor employed in the anthracite ana bituminous coal mines of Pennsylvania n 1012. Notwithstanding the decrease I" the production of anthracite, moro men were employed In the anthracite mines in 1912 than In 1911. whereas In the bituminous bitu-minous mines the production showea a material Increase with fewer employees. The number of men employed In the anthracite mines in 1912 was 1. 4,030. against 172.5S5 in 1911. The bituminous workers numbered IG.1,144 In 1912 and 16S.199 In 1911. The average number or working days In the anthracite rcsion, however, decreased from 246 In 1"1' 10 231 In 1912, while In the bituminous mines the average working time increased in-creased from 233 days in 1911 to 2n- las In 1912. Tho average yearly production per man In tho anthracite region in yi-waa yi-waa 431 long or 46 short tons, and in the bituminous fields. 9S0 short tons, inc total number of men employed lri mt coal mines of Pennsylvania in 191- 33 339,174. against 340.S59 in 101L |
