Show GIVES FIGURES ON CANE SUGAR Secretary Redfield Makes Public Result of Department of! Commerce Inquiry. WASHINGTON, April 10. Tho average aver-age cost of producing a pound of sugar in Louisiana was 4.30 cents in 1011; in 1910 it was 3.72 and in 1909 it was 3.62 cents, as shown by an investigation by the department of commerce, the result re-sult of which was made public today by Secretary Rcdfiold. Tho high cost in 1911, it is oxplnincd, was duo to the sovero froeze, which reduced the avcr-ag avcr-ag 3ieM of sugar per Ion of cano ground to 1H3 pounds that year, whereas ih 1010 it was 147 pounds and in .1909 was lob pounds. A comparison for five yeaTS of Cuban and certain Louisiana factories is made to show that tho yield in Cuba was 229.3 pounds per ton of cano and 161.9 in Louisiana. Tho sucroso in extraction juice was 16 por cent in Cuba and 11,5 in' Louisiana. Both( agricultural and factor costs are given. The average cost of producing a ton of cano ready for tho fnctory in 1911 was $4. in 1910 it was $4.30 and in 1909 was $4.15. Tn the factories the cost of production per ton of cane ground was $5.S1 in 1911; in 1910 it wns $5.19, and in 1909 it was $5.65. |
