Show W andamere Prepared to Entertain Many Thousands of Guests Today The, Now "Panama" Locks at Wandainere Which Will Be Formally Opened Today With President Joseph P. Smith Officiating. Prom the plans that have been made by the management aud the arrangements arrange-ments that have been announced it is evident that Wandamore oxpects a record rec-ord crowd and the programme of events which begins at 10 o'clock this morning with a band concert, of national na-tional airs in the natural amphitheater, closes tonight with a grand ball that follows the big card of the motorcycle races in the motordrome which opens at S:lo o'clock. In fact, from tho time the first car load of "kiddies" and their parents arrivo at Wantlamerc this mornintr there will be but. fow momenta mo-menta tbrouehout the remainder of the day that will not see something doing at some corner of the park. The motorcyclo races tonight will bo run before a crowd of 10,000 people, it is expected, as the management has staged a card of events that contains a half-dozen unusual features and tho thrills and throbs that go with men and. machines traveling in bluish blurs around a saucor track never fail to prove an irresistible drawing card. Fred Whittler, tho crack rider of tho piopan, will attempt to lower tho track record for ono mile. This record is 12 3-5 seconds and if Whittler pulls it down it will moan that the crowd will seo the fastest milo over traveled in Salt Lake. Seven other races aro on tho programme and a score of riders will daro the dangers of traveling at the rate of ninety miles an hour, to entertain tho throngs who will fill grandstands and bleachers. Between the races the fireworks display dis-play of the resort for the night will be set off fom tho center of tho arena of the motordrome and as a big sum has been expendod in this lino the display dis-play is likely to develop into one of the biggest features of the night. An enlarged en-larged baud will handle the music for the races. There isn't an hour at the resort that isn't filled with entertainment of some nature. Of principal interest during the da3, however, will probably be the formal opening of the new locks that connect tho old and new lakes at Wan-damero. Wan-damero. Presidont Joseph F. Smith will personally operate tho machinery that will pass the' first boat load through the locks and will dedicate tho new lake. The locks are to be known as tho "Pansima" canal locks and they aro exact miniature copies of regulation regula-tion locks in use at various parts of the country. Each lock is fifty foot-long, foot-long, twclvo feet deep and twelve feet wide. Wodge shape gates hold the wa-ter wa-ter at tho upper end and sliding gates let the boats in and out at tho lower end. A boat passes into tho lock from tho old lake and the gates behind it aro closed. Gradually the water in the lock goes down, carrying the boat with I it, until the water in the lock is tho same lovel as tho surface of the new lake, when tho gates are opened and tho boat passes out. Coming from tho new to tho old lake the wnter in the lock is raised until tho boat can emerge upon tho old lake, the surface of which is three feet higher than that of the new ten acre lake. Band concerts will be given this af-lornoon af-lornoon and overy concession in the park will help handle the crowds. Wan-damoro Wan-damoro is at its prettiest with a wealth of shady nooks, great, greon, cool, velvety vel-vety lawns, pretty lake banks and. a perfume of hot house flowers ovor it all that has mado Wandamore the most distinctive resort of its kind in the in-torinountain in-torinountain west. A "playgrounds" corner will bo maintained for tho youngsters and trainod nurses will care for the babies that aro checked there by parents who want to take in the amusements amuse-ments aloue. Automobiles will be parked in the center of the arena of the motordrome for the races at night, whoro without leaving their cars the occupants can view the events from a splendid vantage point. Guards and checkers will care for all horso drawn rigs and there will bo no danger of theft in this quarter. Spocial arrangements havo been mado for caring for the street car traffic to and from tho resort. |
