Show ARBITRATION 10 END SWITCHMEN'S STRIKE Matter to Be Settled So Far as Chicago Is Concerned, Under Un-der Erdman Law. WASHINGTON. Jan. 20. Arbitration is to be the solution of the controversy bolwcon the Chicago railroads and thelT switchmen. This was decided today, announcement an-nouncement being mado by tho mediators that both sides had agreed to refer the matters at Issue to arbitration. The first meeting of tho arbitrators will bo held In Chicago. January 24. Tho conclusion was reached after a week of conferences between Chairman Knapp of the Interstate commerco commission and Dr. is'clll, commissioner of labor, with representatives of the railways and switchmen's union. It was determined that the matters yet in disputo should bo referred to arbitrators, arbitra-tors, and an ugreemcnt was signed naming nam-ing S. E. irobeiilng. first vico president of the Switchmen's Union of North America, as arbitrator for tho swltch-mon, swltch-mon, and C. It. Gray, vico president of tho St, Louis &. San Francisco railroad, for tho railroads. "When the two arbitrators meet in Chicago Chi-cago next Mond.'iy they will endeavor to agree upon a third arbitrator. If they should be unnblo to agree, tho selection will be referred to the mediators. Chairman Chair-man Knapp and Dr. Nclll. "Within ten days after the third arbitrator Is named tho board of arbitration must moot, nnd, by provision of tl)c Erdman law. must roturn its findings within thirty dnys. Tho effect of tho findings of this board on tho strike of tho switchmen on the northwestern railroads will be immediate. Both the northwestern switchmen and tho Chicago switchmen interested aro members of the samo union. Eight of tho Chicago railroads aro Involved In the present proceedings. The other roads employ switchmen who aro members of tho Order of Railway Trainmen. |
