Show THE AMBITIOUS ASS. The chief church organ gsl night bad a scornful editorial on the Presbyterian Presby-terian missions, and it undertook to speak the voice of Christianity to the Presbyterians as if they were outside of Christian fellowship. The idea of the organ of the Mormon church undertaking under-taking to speak for Christianity is grotesque enough, but for it to undertake under-take to speak in the way if did is something more pitiful than humorous. In the course of its screed it got in its usual misrepresentations and falsehoods false-hoods about, the American partv and the American party influence, and put in a passing and pointed hint that it is with the Republicans this year in their Campaign of icing murder as a political politi-cal a&-set. Tho organ, however, was rather weak in scripture, when it spoke about "the voice of Balaam bv which Israel was ensnared. " It will be renjem bered, however, by those familiar with the Balaam story, that there was a miraculous voice from the sturdy beast which Balaam was riding which held back the prophet and prevented the evil to Israel which his bribed tongue was about, to threaten. We can think of nothing more apposite in the News's position with respect to this matter than that it is emulous of Balaam's ass. and is trying fwith but poor effect) lo emulate the wisdom of that, beast, in its warning to the Presbyterians of their error. Here, however, it gets things mixed, as usual, and in place of the ass speaking the voice of tho angel, it is the ass speaking the voice of tho prophet, which is always directed by self-interest and is always injurious to the cause of truth and" righteousness This has been the record ot the church ass from the first Its voice has al wavs misled the people, and has. heen the cause of all the miseries that have come upon them. If that voice had been hushed from the first, and the voice of reason and sense had prevailed here, there would have been uo cause by this time for any recrimination as between any form of Christianity or civilization and Mormoniam |
