Show ALDRICH AND GOLD BONDS. We have been constantly told that the tariff bill was prepared with immense im-mense care and with all duo consideration considera-tion for tho public and private interests inter-ests of this country. The outrageous fallacy of this claim, however, is completely com-pletely exposed ou many sides, the ox-posuro ox-posuro made by the carded wool manufacturers man-ufacturers being of special and far-reaching far-reaching interest' and importance. And now. because another bit. of slipshod slip-shod carelessness in the preparation of that bill, the oversight is deemed important im-portant enough to insure by a special act of Congress. This Special act Senator Sen-ator Adrich sneaks (this is tho proper word to use since he has dono so) a bill through tho Senate correcting the oversight, not a word of explanation, or debate acconipa'ing the passage of this bill. It was designed to "correct" Section 39 0 the now tariff law, which authorizes tho Secretary of tho Treasury Treas-ury to issue 3 per cent bonds, but omit-ted omit-ted to make them payable in gold! as Aldrich'a intention evidently was since he specifically made tho inlorost on them payable in gold. Tho omission of gold payment, for tho principal was pointed out by a goldito paper, which accompanied thd exposure of Aldrich's carelessness by saying that "nobody would want to buy what might have been called Bryan bonds." And there you have it. Nobody wanted to omit tho word "gold" from tho bill in relation to the payment of the principal of the bonds, and yet it was omitted. Of Course thoy wore in-tondod in-tondod to bo gold bonds, and 3'ct in a matter so important to tho goldito view as this, Aldrich absolutely overlooked tho insertion of that important word. But ho docs not dosiro to have atten tion called to this omission, so ho w:orki through tho Scnato, under cover, this corrective bill. " Tho reason why ho wants secrecy about this is very evident. evi-dent. Ho has boon boasted by President, Presi-dent, Tnft as a groat financial authority, and he has tho rcputo of that; lo maintain. main-tain. But it would be mighty hard to mnintain that; rcputo among tho goldito crow to which ho belongs, if ho were conspicuously posted as omitting tho important word "gold" in this connection. connec-tion. And so, as he has the repute of being a great financial authority to mnintain, ho wants as little said of his glaring omission as possible, and his follow senntors aid and nbet him in this, as doubtless will do also (he gold interests in tho House. |
