Show iliislf WMWMi LEG Mechanician Also Is Injured When Auto Skids on Hoo-sicr Hoo-sicr Speedway. INDIANAPOLIS. May 24. An Amplex racing car, driven by Joe Horan of New York, skidded and turned over while going at high speed on tho Indiana speedway speed-way today, and Heron suffered a broken leg. His mechanician, Emmclt Ward, was badly bruised. It was tho llrst serious accident since the forty-six entrants in tho Memorial day 500-mIlo raco began tuning their cars at tho speedway. Horan. only a few hours before had succeeded Walter Jones as driver of the Amplex car and was familiar neither with It nor with the track. Horan -was coming into the home stretch when the accident occurred. He was still well up on the bank and throw the steering wheel over to make the turn. The car uwerved sharply, Horan lost control and the machine plunged across the track to lhc inllcld. When the front wheels struck tho sand and mud beyond the Inner curb the car somersaulted som-ersaulted three times. Horan and Ward were thrown clear of the car twenty feet. 1 . Horan's right leg was broken and a deep gash was cut in his forehead. Ward was stunned and bruised. The car was wrecked apparently beyond repair. At tho time of the accident most of the entrants In the big race were on tho course working out their cars for the elimination trials, which are to be held Friday. Only a few were close behind Horan when tho Amplex turned, and thus a collision was averted. |
