When the house committee Investigating tho post-office post-office department began Its Inquiry today. to-day. William Mooney. chief disbursing clerk, was on the stand regarding the payment of salary to former Third Assistant As-sistant Postmaster General I,awshc during dur-ing a year's absence from the depart- , ment. Mr. Mooney said the salary of $5000 a year was paid from October. J00D. to October. 1010. while Mr. Lawshe was in Now Mexico endeavoring to recuperate from Illness. Postmaster General Hitchcock Hitch-cock countersigned the payroll containing contain-ing Lawsne's name. The witness added Mr. Hitchcock took over the greater part of Lawshe's work during the lattcr's absence. ab-sence. Merritt O. Chance, formerly auditor for the postofficc department. and Charles A. Cram, who succeeded him, testified regarding the cxpenso account of postmasters designated by the department depart-ment to Investigate and tost time recorders' re-corders' throughout the country. That committee consisted of Postmasters Owens nt Milwaukee. Bacharach at Atlantic At-lantic City, and Bean at Tampa. Fla.
