Negotiations are now well under way and plans will be perfected here for the consolidation of thtt two telephone systems of Boise, the Uocky Mountain Bell Telephone company and the Independent Telephone company. A similar consolidation was mado in noiihwestem cities recently. The following formal statement has been given to. the public: 'Negoliailons are punding looking to-v.ardf. to-v.ardf. the consolidation of "the local telephone tel-ephone interests. These negotiations have been conducted mainly by E. II Hoggs of Boise and J. E. Jennings, a prominent business man of Salt Lake, and through the good offices of these gentlemen has progressed sufficiently to mature a plan for tho consolidation of local lo-cal telephone Interests. A meeting of stockholders will consider the advisability of using tho present Independent organization organ-ization and this will necessitate the amendment of Us charter so as to chango its name to one-of a local color and conform con-form It io the requirements of tho enlarged en-larged organization. 'Neither company can make money under un-der existing conditions and it has been Judged wise to procuro the local telephone tele-phone business to be conducted under the single management. This will relieve all necessity of keeping rnoro than one telephone In any one place of business nnd at tho same time will give evcrv subscriber connection with every other subscriber on cither system The cost of maintenance and operation " of the two systems, under one management, will be much less than tho combined cost of separate maintenance and operation." Eleven years ago last December the Independent Telephone company opened for business in this city with a small equipment which shortlv was found Inadequate. In-adequate. Four years later the Independent Inde-pendent Long Distance Telephone company com-pany was organized and a year later a merger of the two Independent concerns was effected. Tho capital stock of the original Independent company was $100,-000. $100,-000. This has been incroased until $250.-000 $250.-000 of slock has been issued. Most of tills Is held by Idaho people. After the Independent merger tho companv purchased pur-chased properly on which it erected Its own operating building at a cost of $20,-000. $20,-000. wnicli has slnco been Its home. The merger is viewed with satisfaction satisfac-tion here duo to the fact that while both systems have been adequate, many have been forced to extra expense and Inconvenience Incon-venience by the two. It Is slated here on reliable authority that morgcrs in other southern Idaho cities will shortly bo effected. |
