Show REAL REASON WHY LAUDERJSBARRED Presiding Bishopric Repudiated Repudi-ated Contract, for Show in Tabernacle, Fearing Tax. JULIAN ELTINOE'S STUNT WAS NOT THE CAUSE Low-Necked Dresses and Abbreviated Ab-breviated Skirts "Would Not Shock the Authorities. Information leaked out Saturday that the real reason why the presiding bishopric bish-opric of tho Mormon church had repudiated re-pudiated their contract wilh Harry Lauder Lau-der for his appearance in the Salt Lnko Tabernacle, was not because of tho act of Julian Ellinge, Ihe female impersonator, imperson-ator, who drosses in gowns cut. low in the neck and with abbreviated skirts, but for another reason. This roason was that the church authorities au-thorities feared that tho Tabernacle and the several amusement halls which Ihe church owls 'would bo assessed for taxes. All this property has thus far escaped taxation, it being alleged (hat it was all for religious purposes, hence not taxable. Cajt Well Pay Damages. This is whv the cou tract was repudiated. re-pudiated. The church could well afford to pay Mr. Morris, who is managing Harry' Lauder and his company, $5000 or $10,000 damages, rather than put themselves m such a position as would compel I ho civil authorities to assess the property named. 1 The morning organ of I he. church, tho Hemorrhage, commends (he refusal of Lauder, and then objects to his appearing ap-pearing in ihe Tabernacle, stating that the work of Mr. Lauder was unfitted for such a placo as tho Tabernacle. But Mr. Lauder was not the objection. Tho ecelosinsf-s so declared. Tt, was another stunt, that, that, stunt, was, as' said, not Julian Iiltinge, but the fear that Ihe Tabernacle, be assessed for taxation, and a second reason was that tho Tabor-naclo Tabor-naclo choir, which numbers between four and six hundred members, would not be admitted free. Knew What They Were Doing. The contract oulorcd info, by which the famous Scotch comedian was fo appear ap-pear in the Tabernacle, was not made under a misapprehension or misinformation, misinfor-mation, but tho contracting parties, on behalf of tho church, made it with their eyes open, and now that they have repudiated t hair contract; now that they plead tho holy act, is solcl- and pur'elv for the reason stated above. Thoy do not want the church property taxed, as it may be if they persist in rcntiug the Tabernacle and other church proper prop-er tv for show purposes. And this is why, sinco the matter was pointed out in Tho Tribune, that the church qfficials decline to allow Mr. Lauder to appear even if he modifies his programme. A. queo" naturally suggests itself in connection with this matter. It is: has the choir joined, vaudeville or has vaudeville vaude-ville joined the choir? |
