FIGHT IS MADE AGAINST OIIKISTENSEN AND EATON Former's Increase Opposed on Economical Grounds; Ealon Opposition Personal. The city board of education, at its regular reg-ular meeting Tuesday night, granted Increases In-creases of salaries lo tho city superintendent superin-tendent of schools, principal of the high school and the principals of the elementary elemen-tary schools of the city. All tho Increases In-creases are in keeping with this advances heretofore made City Superintendent of Schools D. II. Cbrlstensen was re-elected for the enau-Ing enau-Ing two years by a unanimous vote. The quostlon of an Increase of his salary from $1000 to ?4800 per annum met with somo opposition from .Mr. Martin, Mr. Newman and Mr. Glauque, solely from an economical standpoint, and not on personal per-sonal grounds. They argued that tho board could not afford at this time to make such a large Increitse. Mr. Martin Mar-tin moved its an amendment, to tho recommendation rec-ommendation of the committee on teachers teach-ers luid school work that tho salary be Increased from $1000 to S4500. This amendment was lost on a tlo veto of I to I, Mr Martin", Mr. Glauque. Mr. Newman and Mr. Barretto voting in favor fa-vor of the amendment and Mr. ISalloy, Mr. Thomas, Mr. Parle and Mr. Van Pelt against It. The point then was raised that President Hammond had. not voted on the question, and ho recorded his voto against the amendment, so that It was lost anyway. The motion to Increase the salary to $IS0O then was carried by a vote of fi to 3. Mr. Martin, Mr. Glauque and Mr. Newman voting against It. Eaton Opposition Personal. The hoard went Into committee of tho whole to consider the salaries of the principals of the schools. Tho question of an increase la the salary of Principal George A. Faton of the high school, from $:!0UO to ?r.600 per annum, was taken up llrst. Mr. Newman and Mr. Martin opposed op-posed the Increase on personal grounds, claiming that Mr. Eaton was not entitled to an Increase at all, on account of his record. They claimed that ho was too extravagant and bad failed to obey some of the orders of the board. Mr. Glauque moved as ah amendment to the committee report that the salarj' be placed at $3300 Instead of ?:1000. but tho amendmont was lost by a voto of 3 to 4. The motion lo Increase the salary to ?3G00 then wns carried by a vote o"f S to 3. Mr. Newman, Mr. Martin and Mr. Glauque voting against It. Elementary Principals Raised. Allen, Lillian hlmonds, Lydla Schramm and Gertrude Norton. The following teachers wore granlcd increases of salaries: Anna- Erlckson, Sadie Rosser, May Taylor and Helen Boxrud. The board awarded tho contract for installing in-stalling the heating plant at the now Waterloo school to Davidson & Harris on their bid of $7705. The Webster beating beat-ing system will be used. Heavy Repairs Ordered. Repairs on school buildings in the city, amounting to $25,026, were approved by the board and ordered made. The committee on buildings and grounds was authorized to advertise for bids for coal for the schools for tho coming year, lo be opened July 12. A medical staff, consisting of tho present pres-ent board physician. Dr. Whitney. Health Commissioner Dr. S. G. Paul and Dr. T. Tt. Beatty, secretary of the state board of health, and ten other physicians of the city, each member of the board lo name one physician, was provided for bv the board. The medical statT will "have charge of the physical and medical examination ex-amination of teachers employed by the board. Eli A. Folland was re-elected superintendent super-intendent of buildings andttgrounds for two years. Young & Young sent In a' communication communica-tion asking that the board take immediate imme-diate action on the Belcher property for the new high school site. The matter was referred to the committee on buildings build-ings and grounds for consideration. This was the only reference niado in the meeting meet-ing to the high school site. Tho treasurer of the board reported a balance on hand May 31 of $110,005.80. |
