No action was taken by the Engineering Engi-neering committee at tho committee meetings of Council, Thursday night, ou tho petition of property owners on Seventh East street for the paving with asphalt of that thoroughfare from Brigham to Second South street. Tho petitioners want a twenty-four-foot driveway on cither side of - the street with a twenty-four-foot, park in tho center, na is tho caso with Sixth Fast street, and it. is understood that llir. -nnl it intiora fnr fllft itlinrnvemmil. 'of Third aud Fourth Fast streets want thoso thoroughfares improved in the same manner. If the petitions are granted, tho question naturally arises as to who will havo to tako care of tho mid-street mid-street parks. It is tho general opinion that tho city will havo to caro for the parks, aud this is what is causing the committee to hesitate in recommending to Council that the petitions be granted. Another argument is that a Iwentj--four foot driveway is not large enough for vehicles to turn in, but drivers say that almost any vehicle can turn easily in this space. The Streets committee recommended that tho Board of Public Works be authorized to ask for bids for the paving with asphaltum of State street from Seventh to Ninth South streets. Will Deed to City. Tho Mountain Lako Mining company com-pany proposes to deed' to tho city surface sur-face rights to its propertj- in Big Cottonwood Cot-tonwood in order to help it to obtain patent upon its lands from the Government. Govern-ment. The proposition was submitted to tho Engineering committee Thursday Thurs-day night and referred to the City Attorney At-torney for an opinion as to its advisa-bilitv advisa-bilitv and legnlity. On this property aro Lakes Marv and Martha, in which the city already has rights, but it is claimed that the municipality would acquire certain vested rights instead of merely easements were it to accept the mining compairy's deed to the property. prop-erty. Its water facilities also would bo "increased, it is argued. The Streets committee will ask the Council to require persons seeking permission per-mission to fence a part of tho street for building purposes to file au indemnity indem-nity bond to insure the city from judg-mehts judg-mehts against it for injuries in accidents acci-dents caused by such fences. Two or three damago suits against the city have resulted from accidents of this nature, and the Council Reeks to protect pro-tect tho municipality against other suits.
