Show SCOTTY AT GREENWATER. Death Valley Mystery Still Is the Same Mystery as of Old. The Mystery of Death Valley visited Greenwater this week In his gyrations through the desert, coming from Rliyo-lite Rliyo-lite by nuto by way of Emigrant Springs and Furnace Creek ranch. "Scotty was chauffcured by his favorite. "Shorty Harris," Har-ris," and stated In his mysterious manner that he was enrouto to Las Vegas. Naturally, Nat-urally, the curious gathered about him and then wondered why he would make the detour to Emigrant Springs and Furnace Fur-nace Creek ranch if he was going to Las Vegas, says the Greenwater Mirror. As a matter of fact, no one here really puts any credence into anything that "Scotty" says, and theso believe as readily that he was on his way to Death valley as to Las Vegas, or possibly to Jericho, or to the land of his remunerative dreams. For the worst that may be believed against "Scotty," tho mystery or Death valley, he at least has some of the real money with which to keep the merry game a -running. Auto trips in a hired auto cost money, and no one knows this better than the man of the desert, who at times pays $1000 just for such a trip as "Scotty" was taking this week. "Scotty" probably did not pay this much. His favorite chauffeur makes him rates, for "Scotty" has of late become a very good customer, preferring "Shorty's" ancient an-cient Pope to his own mule "Slim." And for these trips he pays with real money, even as he spends a little real money over the bars where he visits. This latter expenditure Is not large. He is rather careful not to spend too much money In buying drinks for the curious public, yet lie buys a few, and buying them always every day takes money. No one had the temerity to ask him here what of the ambush which appears to be his latest accomplishment. The man Jackson, who was supposed to have been wounded, was not in the machine with him. although they were probably still on the trip which they undertook from Rhyolite some, days ago with bandages ban-dages for this man. At best "Scotty" Is still a mystery, enjoys being such and seems to make It pay, The latest and certainly a good theory as to his mythical finances Is that he has unearthed the great treasure burled more than half a-century a-century ago by the ill-fated Mormon party near Surveyor's wells In Death valley. val-ley. This spot is near to the haunts of "Scotty," and this treasure would be adequate ade-quate to explain the man's resources which he appears to have In this country of death. |
