Show THEIR LAW-DEFYING FREEDOM. Spcakors for tho cult which tho Deseret Des-eret News represents uublushingly declare de-clare Joseph Smith, Jr., to havo been as great a savior of mankind if not greater great-er than the Son of man Himself. But now tho organ of the unclean polyga-mists polyga-mists adds to the ugly offensivenoss of the amalgamated treason and the blasphemy blas-phemy by drawing a pretended comparison com-parison between the aims and striviugs of tho Constitution makers of this country coun-try and the objects of the establishment establish-ment of tho Mormon church. During the course of its dissertion upon this subject, the News says: And the Latter-day Saints, looking backward upon their own history, may well be grateful today for "tho blessings of liberty," since they, too, in their way, havo been subjected, chiefly through the malice of profligate men and the misrepresentations of bigoted and fanatical fa-natical zealots, who have been their foes, to a deprivation of the same four great classes of rights. These four rights are correctl' stated as being (1) Tho right of trial by jury; (2) That a man 's homo is his castle, and must not be invaded without with-out just cause, even under law; (3) That the civil is superior to the military mili-tary power; (4) That there should bo no taxation without representation. After Af-ter having designated these four general gen-eral points, upon which the Constitution Constitu-tion makers made complaint that tho people of this country had been mistreated,, mis-treated,, the church organ goes on to state, in general terms and noticeably without specification that the saints have been subjected to these same injustices in-justices under tho Government of the United States. It is" quite true that the Later-day Saints, especially of the Smith and Boberis l'pe, may return many thanks for the existence of freedom under the flag; for hy means of it they have been enabled, and quite recently, to stand in the most public place provided b their church, to howl forth defiance of the law and to exploit their polygamous polyga-mous putrescence under the nostrils of the multitude. Under the protection of American liberty they have been enabled en-abled to parade in public the muck of their distempered personal practices, without fear of reprimand or dread of punishment. Becau3o of tho political power which they have acquired under tho liberal grants of the Constitution of the United Slates (nngraciousl' abused and ungratefull' suborned to their ends), the hierarchs have released from quarantine a festering pestilence which once was the especial object of watchfulness on tho part of patriots. In long and in short, tho priesthood has taken advantage of every privilege which is vouchsafed by this Government, Govern-ment, solely with tho desire to set the law at naught and to express contempt for the institutions of the country. As to the first proposition the right of trial by jury tho Mormon leaders have always opposed and avoided it. They have insisted that their crimes were part, and parcel of their religion. Never in their lives have they been willing will-ing to submit a trial b.y jury, as a means of determining eithr their guilt or their innocence. They havo contested to tho bitter end tho right of law to take cognizance of their offenses and to punish pun-ish the same as the statutes prescribe. When the Government enacted laws, which would have the effect of bringing bring-ing their immoral practices within the pale of the judiciary, and therefore subject to trial by jury, tho high priests spent the substance of the saints iu a most bitterly determined fight against the Government and the Constitution. The polygamous cult today refuses lo be tried by jury, although tbc.y admit aud flaunt their guilt under the law, and they utilize their political power to impose this injustice upon the law-abiding law-abiding and patriotic citizens of this and surrounding commonwealths. The wholo object of the Mormon church is lo do away with trial by jury and substitute sub-stitute in lieu thereof judgment by the high priests. , In respect lo the second porposition that a man 's home is Bacrcd let it first be noted that the sanctity is contended con-tended to belong to a man's homo, not his HOMES. But in all of the his-tory his-tory of the church, there has not been auy attempt to invade the Mormon home, except where the Mormon has committed an offense against the law, or delivered a deliberate insult to society. so-ciety. Tn those cases, the officers of the law have sought only to enforce the statutes which the' were sworn to maintain and to vindicate as against malicious and unscrupulous vandals. Tho practice of the ccclosiasts has been to precipitatel' flee from the rightp, ous chastisement which was their Vine, and to hide away from sight, leaving but one course open to the officers of the law compelling them to make search of premises which, under other and proper prop-er circumstances, would never have been invaded. Concerning the third proposition that the civil is superior to tho military mili-tary power there has never been a moment when the Mormon church was not a militant organization, defying the civil power aud erecting' a defense under the weapon of. brute force Kv- ery act of lawlessness of which the church, as a body, or the loaders in-divldunlly, in-divldunlly, havo been guilty has boon defonded, in the ultimate, under actual or threatened resort, to arms, Ever woo which has como upon tho church has been the immediate result of defiance de-fiance of the civil power; and any resort to the military on tho part of this Government has been only in tho ovent of utlor futility of attempting to doal with ecclesiastically-bred evils by means of tho courts. And even then, the church has robclliously met forco with force, feeling confident of success suc-cess on account of preponderance of numbers or isolation of locality. And upon the fourth proposition that thero should bo no taxation without with-out representationit is only necessary neces-sary to point to tho tithing system of tho church. Tho members of that organization or-ganization are compelled io pay ten per cent of their earnings, without having tho least voice in (he government of the church, except in so far 3S they are permitted to simply hold up a mechanical me-chanical right hand, or utter a parrotlike parrot-like "n3'e," to any rule which the hierarchy may choose to perpetrato upon up-on them. And even then, the questionable ques-tionable privilege is permitted to the slavish dupes without tho satisfaction of knowing where a single dollar of their money goes. As to the method of taxation .without representation, which has been imposed by tho Mormon church in municipal matters, the history his-tory of this community speaks more eloquently than anything that The Tribune could sa Bead it aud believe be-lieve that the hypocrisy of the News is complete. Finally, the church ' organ designates as profligates such men as President Benjamin Harrison, President Grovor Cleveland, Senator Edmunds, and the long list of distinguished executives and judicial officers who have had to do with the civilizing of the barbaric Mormon Mor-mon high priests. Which is only another evidence that the church is hugging to its breast the treason that has always characterized it, and which it is its determination de-termination to propagate and perpetuate perpetu-ate to the final overthrow of the GovernmentConstitution Gov-ernmentConstitution and all if it shall succeed in its aims. |
