Show $500,000 FOR THE DEAF Prominent Persons of Wealth Appealed Ap-pealed to for Endowment Fund. NORFOLK. July t The launching of a movement for the raising of an endowment endow-ment fund of a half million dollar? or more was the feature of the opening session ses-sion of tho Jamestown exposition today of tho National association of the deaf Dr. Edward Miner Gallaudet of Washington, Wash-ington, D. C. founder of the higher, education ed-ucation for the deaf, annuonced that he had appealed to Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller and Mrs. Russell Sage for assistance for the association. Several hundred deaf mutes, representing practically prac-tically every State In the Union, are attending at-tending the convention, which was called to order by President G. W Vedltr. of Colorado Springs. The opening Invocation Invoca-tion was by Rev. J. W. Michaels of Little Rock. Ark., a notable feature being the repeating with lilm in sign language of the Lord's prayer by I he nssemblod delegates. Among the responses to welcoming speeches was that made by Douglas TII-den TII-den of San Francisco. |
