WERE NOT WILLING TO AWAIT THEIR TURNS Depositors of Defunct Chicago Institution Will Get Back 20 Per Cent. CHICAGO, Aug. 24 Sixty policemen wero overwhelmed today by a mad rush of men and women who wore determined deter-mined to get the first monoy paid out of the vaults of tho ruined Milwaukee Avenue State bank. Receiver Fotzer had made arrangements to pay 20 per cent to 5000 of the 22,000 depositors, and ovcrybody was anxious to bo among the 5000. At daybroak tho crowds swarmed around tlie bank, and by 8 o'clock the bank was surrounded by 15,000 people. Sixty policemen had been sent to the bank, but they were unable to handlo the crowd, the greater part of which was unable to understand the English language. Forty more officers were finally final-ly sont to the bank and order was even tlien restored with difficulty. It seemed impossible to make tho depositors de-positors comprehend that although only oOOO wore to be paid todav the others would be paid just as much within tho next few days. At one time the crowd threatened to fairly storm the bank, as, waving their pass-books in the air, they rushecl for the door, shouting in Bohom-inn, Bohom-inn, Polish, Norwegian and Italian. Tho receiver was all clay pajring tho 5000 and will pay as many more tomorrow. |
