After having been In confinement for several months awaiting trial by general court-martial for violation of the thirty-third article of war. nnd having been sentenced by the court to be dishonorably discharged from the service of the United States, Holmes wns notified yesterday that the sentence had been dlwipproved, and that he would be restored to duty with his organization. The sentence was disapproved by the department commander, com-mander, Brig-Gen. Baldwin, on. the grounds that the confinement imposed, im-posed, together with the dishonorable discharge, was beyond the limit for the offense committed. Very few soldiers tried by general court-martial go unpunished, un-punished, and the friends of Private Helmes are congratulating him on his release and restoration to duty. |
