Show FOR BETTER FRUIT-CULTURE. The Salt Lake Horticultural Society Is doing such excellent work that its efforts to extend interest In fruit-growing In Utah should be heartily recognized recog-nized and seconded by every well-wisher well-wisher of the State. That a great work Is to be done here before Utah can take the high position in tho fruit world that her climate, soil, and other natural advantages ad-vantages entitle her to tako, Is evident. But the prize to be won Is great, and there Is the abaoluto certainty of success suc-cess with proper, Intelligent, persistent effort. Tbls society has become known through Its zeal and tho practical ability abil-ity of its discussions and efforts. It stands for the renovation of tho orchards, or-chards, the clearing out of all the pests, and for keeping them cleared out; It stands for a united, encgetlc effort In all needful and appropriate directions, for the upbuilding of the fruit Industry and production of this State. The great need, first of all, is to clean up the orchards; to spray the trees plentifully and Intelligently: to trim them skillfully and beneficially, to get good and appropriate varieties of trees and plant them in locations and under conditions suitable for their growth and fruit production; and to see that the fruit Is properly picked and decently and honestly marketed. With this programme pro-gramme faithfully carried out, Utah need fear no competition In the fruit markets of tho world that any other State can bring to bear. To tho end that the proper means to reach tho desired end may be provided, It Is needful that centers of Information Informa-tion and example should bo established where thoy will do the most good. Wo have two of such centers now, which arc doing good work the Agricultural Experiment Station at Logan and tho Experiment Farm 'at La Vlrkin, in Washington county. Tho Influence of both of these is excellent; In Cacho county for the procurement of better varieties of apples and other tree fruits, and the improved caro of them; and In Washington county for the Improving Im-proving of grapes, the introduction of the raisin grape, and tho betterment generally of the semi-tropical fruit that can advantageously be raised In the "Dixie" country. But the great agricultural belt of the State, reaching from Brlgham City to NephI, and Including all of Weber, Davis, Da-vis, Salt Lake, and Utah counties, which comprise the great farming region, re-gion, has no such center as those mentioned. men-tioned. The conditions of climate, soli, and moisture are much different in this central region from the conditions that exist In the regions where the centers of Information and example are established. estab-lished. What Is good, sufficient, and appropriate In Cache county may not be so completely so In Davis county, Weber county, Utah county, or Salt Lake county. Indeed, some points have already been pointed out where the dif fering conditions require different treatment. And still less do the requirements require-ments In Washington county fit our case. In view of these facts, the Salt Lake Horticultural Society Is moving for the establishment by the State of an experiment experi-ment and exemplar farm in this central region, where the conditions that exist in it can be more successfully met. They will ask that this farm be established, and made to serve as a practical illustration, illus-tration, that all can seo, of what must be done in order to put Utah horticulture horticul-ture on the footing that It can reach, and ought to reach. From It the farmers should be able to leam the trees they should get, where they should plant them In their several localities, how they should care for them, and what the outlook for profitable profi-table returna are In case they take the care and undergo the expense necessary neces-sary to carry out the Instructions received. re-ceived. There Is no doubt In the world that it will pay, but what the farmers want to know Is how, and whether the cost of the successful effort Is within their reach. It is the purpose of the Salt Lake Horticultural Society to urge before the next Legislature a bill creating such an experimental farm, and as It would undoubtedly un-doubtedly be of very great benefit to the State to have such a center of example ex-ample and Information, their effort should be crowned with success. This society Is also urging the formation forma-tion of county horticultural societies throughout the State, in the Interest of fruit-raising, and to foser a spirit of en-erprlse en-erprlse and knowledge of this business among the farmers and fruit-raisers. It is a laudable move; thero can be no doubt of the importance of such local societies, nor of the wide- Influence they could wield In improving the fruit Interests Inter-ests and tho fruit product throughout this State. The society Is also taking another good step, In addressing the several newspaper editors throughout the State, and bespeaking their Interest and cooperation co-operation in raising the fruit production out of the rut into which It has fallen here, and bringing it to the perfection and glory which It can be made to reach. For beauty of form, excellence of flavor, and good qualities of every kind, enough has already been done to Bhow that Utah fruit cannot bo excelled anywhere, If only it Is properly cared for In the selection, growing, and marketing. |
