Show Root May Preside Over Convention Former Secretary Will Likely Wield Gavol at the Chicago Gathering-. WASHINGTON, May 4. The subcommittee sub-committee of the Republican National committee appointed to make arrangements for the 'National convention met here today for the purpose of completing a preliminary prelimi-nary organization of the convention. After agreeing that former Secretary of War Elihu Root would he recommended recommend-ed for temporary chairman, the subcommittee, sub-committee, in looking up the precedents, found that it had been the custom for the full committee to nclect tho temporary tem-porary chairman and this will bo done at a meeting which Chairman Payne will call for Chicago, June 15. Charlen D. Johnson of Minnesota, was agreed upon as general secretary of tho convention. The committee also agreed to recommend John R, Malloy of Ohio as apaii'tant eecretary; seven other assistant secretaries, Including Waller S. Melllck of California; flvo reading clerks, a clerk nt the President's Presi-dent's defk, an official reporter, two tally clerko. a messenger to the chairman, chair-man, a sergcant-at-arms and assistant, and a chief of doorkeepera. All with tho exception, named as one of the assistant as-sistant secretaries, are from east of the Missouri river. . It was decided that each delegate to tho convention would bo apportioned ono gallery' ticket In addition to tho ticket of ad mission to the floor, A report re-port was received from the Central Traffic association paying- that a rate equal to tho faro one way for round-trip round-trip tickets would he mado to and from Chicago, the tickets to bo good goirig from June 16 until Juno 20, and, returning, return-ing, good until the liOth.
