Show MEMORIAL TO CONGRESS CONGRS Petition for Cession of Unclaimed Arid Lids to State The principal work of the afternoon session was the passage of a memorial to Congress asking the cession of all remaining arid lands In tho State to the State to be used for the purpose of perfecting per-fecting and extending the irrigation systems sys-tems the memorial reciting the sense of the convention that this would be more beneficial to the people and result re-sult In a greater and earlier development develop-ment of the State than any other help ful measure proposed This memorial which was advanced as a substitute for a number of resolutions resolu-tions bearing on the same subject was adopted without any serious opposition and provisions after only a short discussion of its TO EXAMINE BILLS Another resolution adopted was that presented by Judge LcGrand Young that a committee of three be appointed tOd examine and investigate the nature and character of the bills before Congress Con-gress In regard to the arid lands region and that the Governor Secretary of State and SurveyorGeneral of Utah be exofllclo members and that the report reptt of the findings and conclusions be Bent to the delegation of Utah now In Congress Con-gress a soon as possible John Henry Smith of Salt Lake Henry Beal of Sanpeteand I C Thorcsen of Cache were named on this committee Judge Young also Introduced another resolution to request the Legislature to appropriate n sufllclent sum to pay the expenses of the country delegates to the convention this was later amended by striking out the word country and in this form passed without opposition TELEGRAM FROM SUTHERLAND Enthusiasm was aroused by the receipt re-ceipt of a telegram from Congressman Sutherland which read a follows Hobcr M Wells Governor Salt Lake The Committee on Irrigation by vote of 7 to 2 has Just agreed to favorably report the Western irrigation bUI A resolution n at once passed en dorsing the Newlands bill as amended bl by Mr Sutherland Qther measures were debated at con siderable length but before the after noon had advanced very far the mem bers began to grow restive and a mo ton to adjourn was received with evi dent delight Before delht adjournment a a vote of thanks a extended the of ficers for their able handling of the business of the convention President conventon Evans responded by thanking Presient gates for their uniform courtesy and the assembly dissolved in a shower of bou of quets to reassemble on the second day April next |
