Show I VERY DESTRUCTIVE FLOOD Greatest One Ever Experienced Along the Schuylkill River Philadelphia March 1Yhat Is said to have been the greatest flood that has ever been experienced along the SchjiylklH river certainly the most dcH I structlve In recent years tore Its way down that stream last night and early this morning and t OtnI It3 i P9it IT inqTjtli l20 mlfosdtmiage lime w reach Into hundreds of thousands has I been done It was an anxious night for the residents and property owricrs along the river Thus far only one life has been lost In this city Michael Igpl aged II years was drowned at 730 this morning In the kitchen of his home at the Falls of Schuylkill FLOOD NOW RECEDING The height of the flood was reached at C oclock this morning when the river which had expanded to twic Its width began to slowly recede and tonight It had fallen about three feet The stream is still out of Its banks however and will scarcely reach Its normal level for twentyfour hours DAMAGE VERY HEAVY Machinery In the Inundated Industrial Indus-trial establishments and household furniture in the dwellings partly submerged sub-merged have been damaged to an enormous enor-mous extent The loss will amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars THOUSANDS OF MEN IDLE It Is Impossible to estimate the number num-ber of men rendered Idle by tho closing clos-ing of tho mills but In one plant alone the Pencoyd Iron Works at Manayunk 8000 men are temporarily out of employment em-ployment THREE LIVES LOST Reports from the Schuylkill valley Indicate that the destruction Is widespread wide-spread At least three fatalities occurred oc-curred today One man was drowned at Spring Mill another at Kutxtown and a third at St ClaIr COLLIERIES INUNDATED Scarcely a colliery In the valley escaped es-caped inundation dwellings were lifted from their foundations and swept away bridges were washed from their supports sup-ports and much livestock on the farms In the lowlands was destroyed ICEGORGE MOVES Tho icegorge In the Susquehanna river near Nantlcoke moved today and the river has receded about live feet The Lchlgh and Little LehlKh rivers are still high but no further damage Is expected from them HAS DONE ITS WORST At midnight Indications are that the flood has done Its worst Tho Monon ganela marks at the SmIthfield street bridge showed at that time 319 u fall C The Allegheny l of nearly a foot since p I m legheny at Herrs isltind 1 registered 3iB a fall of 3 of a foot since 6 p m At DaviSs Island dam the water stood almost al-most stationary at 301 feet Early In the I evening It was almost a certainly that 33 3 feet the mark made by the clHaslious flood of 1884 would be ox cueded and that much greater damage would bo done because of the more Interests In-terests affected |
