Show I i DOGS PREFERRED RABBITS i Started After Coyotes but Turned Asldo for Two Jacks Getting Coyotes Later A most exciting chase took place last Sunday near Saltalr Alex E Lee of Murray and several gentlemen from Salt Lake made up a party taking with them a pack of about fifteen I hounds Two coyotes were jumped up and the dogs were turned loose In hot pursuit The coyotes had about half a mile the lead but the dogs weregrad ually cutting down the distance the chase taking a southeasterly course The chase had continued about a mile when two jackrabbits Jumped up In the path of the dogs They Immediately Immediate-ly took after the rabbits leaving the trail of the coyotes which ran away about a mile and sat up on their haunches watching the dogs and rabbits rab-bits Every effort was made to put the dogs back on the original course but the greyhounds were bound to get those rabbits or die in the attempt Finally one of the Jacks was run down while the other escaped down a hole The party then went back over some of the ground traversed and rode toward to-ward the south mountain range Reaching the foothills the course was changed to the east and after riding about three miles the coyotes were again sighted Efforts were made to slip up on the quarry but they were too watchful The dogs were unleashed un-leashed and the party followed behind on horseback The chase lasted about an hour when finally the pack overtook over-took and killed one of the coyotes J Qth n1Jn1Wl n J lriUUc mvhczr hc waiitir Jy cxhaustni1 and could barely run The dogs were also quite worn out but kept up the chase and finally made the coyote take to a hole The hole was smaller than the coyote but he squeezed himself Into It leaving his tall sticking about a foot above tho ground The dogs tried to pull him out but could not So the three men took hold of tho tall and after tugging for ten minutes managed to pull the animal out and the dogs killed him |
