Show IN FAVOR OF NEW JAIL TREE COUNCILMEN LISTEN TO AN ADDRESS Mrs Valance Who Is Interested in Prison Work Speaks of the Need of a New Structure A Joint meeting oC tho Committees of the City Council on Police and Prisons Pris-ons and on Finance was to have been held at the office of the Chief of Police last night to consider the proposition of building a new city jail but n quorum failed to report There were present Robertson of the Finance committee Cottrell of the Police and Prison committee com-mittee old Fcrnstrom who belongs to both committees Mrs J S Valance who has taken much Interest 5h i the matter was present to urge the building build-ing of the jai and stated that the present pres-ent Jail was unsanitary and that boys in the Jail were obliged on account of Insufficient room to associate with the men and that no division could be made between the better and the wore class of prisoners A motion made by Robertson was carried that It was he sense of those present that the city should advertise to 6 1 some available property for the purpose of raising funds with which to build a Jail hls motion It was stated could not In molon any tray bind elhor I of the committees recommendation to and was merely a the Council from the three members of tho Council present Mrs Valance also raised the question of boys being allowed In saloons saying say-Ing that she had recently Seen two boys 12 or 1 years of age in the Terrible Terri-ble Swede saloon and acting as If Intoxicated In-toxicated Mr Robertson informed I her that the license of any saloon In the city which allowed boys of that age within Its doors would be rcokcd If proper evidence was furnished |
