the reports ot the subcommittees showed that the preparations for the reception care and entertainment the vast crowd I which will fill Zion next week ore nearly near-ly I perfected The committee seems to have done Its work well and on Tuesday Tues-day thc whole proposition will be passed up to the citizens of Salt Lake The only regrettable feature of last nights discussion was the development of the fact that the responses to appeals ap-peals for funds had not come up to expectations pectations and that the committee receipts re-ceipts are something like 1000 behind the estimated expenses A reason for this IL was stated was In unexpected demands fqr larger allowances than had at first been agreed upon for the decorations and the various entertainments entertain-ments INCREASED EXPENSES In the first place the attendance is to be much greater than was anticipated I and for this reason all plans had to be I extended A thousand citizens have I been Invited to attend the big nat l n-at the Knutsfordundbccauseo ot und because of the crowd there must be more decoration 1 I and more refreshment so the reception alowancr was raised 150 The contracts con-tracts for the Elks smoker contcm plating a rare entertainment for nearly I 2000 people called for an Increase In I the cost from SOO to 1000 Originally 10 Orlslnal II 1 it i was thought that the livestock show would cost 1000 but it Is found that 1000 will be needed This Is explained i I by the fact that where only 130 cattle I were expected there will 400 and where I ZOO sheep were expected there will nearer 000 All of this stock must be fed by the committee A partial relief was offered to the finance committee by liberal donations of gentlemen present at the meeting mcetns Mr Parsons for the Utah and Colorado Cattle and Improvement company gave 3100 Mr Wood for the Wood Cattle company gave 100 Jesse M Smith for the Utah WoolGrowers gave 150 Mr Hatch for thc Deseret LiveStock company 50 F L Oswald 25 and A J Nelson 25 These subscriptions were I received with applause DECORATIVE LIGHTING Messrs Parsons and Smith reported the success of their efforts to get additional addi-tional street and decorative lighting during the convention The city will I expend 500 for lights which will Include In-clude forty arcs There will bean Illuminated minated flag a bee hive and a motto made of electric lights about 550 in candescents in all suspended at three of the chief street Intersections Besides Be-sides these the show grounds will be lighted Reports showed that the decoration of the convention hall the preparation of coupon books and the making of a large variety of badges are all progressing pro-gressing rapidly An offer from AH Hallows college to provide n literary and musical entertainment I enter-tainment on Thursday night was declined de-clined with thanks as it might be considered con-sidered discourteous to Prof Judson who will give an illustrated lecture on r grasses on that evening The committee instructed Secretary I Martin to telegraph to President JC 1 I Stubbs of the University of Nevada Inviting I In-viting him to address the convention upon the subject oC irrigation Prof I Maxwell of California was to have dla cussed this subject but is prevented I from attending THE SADDLE CONTEST 4 After considerable discussion of schemes for booming the saddle con test which by the way promises to develop Into a hot light next week the committee decided t close the nine separate polls at 3 oclock on the afternoon after-noon of the 18th and to consolidate them at some central point where for two hours the voting will be open and the votes tabulated on a blackboard During the discussion Julian Hout announced that he had 200 to spend J for one candidate providing the polls ta ken Saturday FLAGS AND BUNTING The following appeal for nags and bunting has been made by Chairman John Q Cannon The scheme of decoration for the Assembly hall for the convention in volves such an enormous display of na tional colors that the committee finds Itself much strained to secure sufficient Hags and bunting While a general pub lie decoration of private buildings and business houses is desired and IB to bo encouraged the committee feels to call upon the people for the loan of all such flags etc aa will not be otherwise used on the occasion If marked with the owners names the property that may be thus loaned will be carefully oared for by the committee and re turned In good condition A patriotic and generous response is hoped for in answer to this request and messengers
