Show School Examination. 1 A public examination of the 4th ; ward school, by the teacher, Capt. J. Witherell, was held on Friday last. The bishop, trustees and other prominent promi-nent citizens of the ward were pres- 1 ent to witness the exercises, which ( were conducted in such a manner ai to indicate a peculiar skill on the -part of the teacher. This . review was held at the close of a i three months' term, during which 1 tho proficiency attained by tho pupils in tho studies over which they had passed, was very satisfactory to the patrons of the school. The first reading read-ing class has read through the book, and can read pretty well; a majority of its members did not know their letters at the beginning of the term. The second, third and -fourth readers followed in their turn. The fourth reading class was examined on the elements of elocution and tho analysis of words. Mr. Arthur Haigh analyzed the word "coming," Tho word "Kate" was suggested, which Mr. M. E. Jenkins analyzed very creditably, credit-ably, first giving its oral elements, i then tho com position of those ele-l menbj, naming the palatal, pure tone, lingual and mute, the cognates, vowels and consonants. This is a very valuable exerciso to develop the organs of speech. This same young gentleman has also accomplished wonders in the art of penmanship. A class in Monteith's second-part geography geog-raphy was reviewed from the first of the book through the United States. The class answered in concert, missing miss-ing but very few questions. The grammar class came next and reviewed re-viewed from the first of the book to t the conjugation of the verb. They diagramed some sentences, Bhowing a fair knowlodge of analysis. The first arithmetic passed from the first of the book to U. S. money; the second arithmetic class commenced at compound com-pound numbers and completed fractions. frac-tions. "All of these classes passed a very creditable examination, considering con-sidering the short time they have been under the tuition of Mr. Witherell. Last night, to close up the work of the term, they had a school exhibition, exhibi-tion, which reflected great credit both upon the performers and teacher. A vote cf thanks was tendered totue captain and Mrs. Witherell, for the able manner in which they had conducted con-ducted tho exhibition, and for the extra exertions they had made in preparing so pleasant an evening's entertainment. Bishop Thomas i Jenkins stated in his remarks at the close, that the progress of Che school I and the evening's entertainment had gone far beyond his expectations. ! The Rev. C. 0. Stratton, being pres-1 ent, was called on to address the audience, au-dience, and kindly responded by making a few very encouraging and approbative remarks. The exhibition exhibi-tion will be repeated on next Monday night, with some changes in the programme. pro-gramme. The school will have one week's vacation. |
