The movement is mado by 1,500 troops of tha garrison, in conjunction with the pojple of the towD. Ferrol is a strongly fortified seaport, advantageously situated situ-ated npon a narrow arm of the sea V?:uob. admits of "the approaoh of but one vessel at a time, and is commanded by tho castles of Palma and San Felipe. The troops having seized the gunboats in port, and imprisoned tho lighthouse .keepers, there is no chanco for government govern-ment to throw in reinforcements by water. Tho town is strongly .fortified by walls and forts, and contains a ppulationof some 17,01)0. Our first iitbrmation states that tho Spanish authorities have adopted summaiy meisurea to put down the revolt, but under tho circumstances the adoption of measures may bo easier thau their execution. Spain makes elow progress in suppressing her internal disturb ances. The great lever against the throne is the church, which exerts a powerful influence among tho malcontent, malcon-tent, and it is a question whether King Amadeus will be able to retain his crown another twelve months, not withstanding his popularity. |
