He was 'held as a witness against his father, who is now under indictment for the murder, G. Joseph Rancho, one of the ajv p raisers of the stores on Greenwich and New Church streets, while leaning over the hole of an elevator, yestcrday evening, was struck on the head by a descending car. His skull was frightfully fright-fully crushed, lie cannot recover. It is learned that Williamson, the principal in the recent heavy forgeries, for-geries, left New York on Saturday, on the way for Canada. Detectives are in close pursuit. A slight fire occurred last night, at 199 Ninth street, Williamsburg. When the fire was extinguished the body of Margaret Hammel was found burned, with a piece of bed-cord tied around her neck. The occupants of the apartment have been arrested. The young stallion "Smuggler," owned by Captain Tough, of Kansas, was purchased on Tuesday last by Col. H- C. Russell, of Milton, Mass., for $4,000. "Smuggler" has made fast time, trotting a mile at Prospect Park, a week ago, in 2:19ij-. A man named Price attempted to beat his brains out with n paving-stone, paving-stone, to-day. The police finally overpowered over-powered him and he was locktd up. The decline in gold, to-day, caused great alarm among the bulls of Broad and Wall streets. Rumors were on the street that nearly every house that has been connected with the leaders in bulling the market will be hopelessly hope-lessly ruined. The banks which have been backers of the bulls have deserted desert-ed them, and are now trying to secure tl) cm selves. Wm. F. Clausscn, a second in the Gray-Aicksh ire duel, was brought before be-fore the court of Oyer and Terminer, to-day, to answer for contempt in refusing re-fusing to reply to questions by the grand jury, in regard to the duel. Clausscn stated in court that he declined to answer on the ground that it would criminate liim-self. liim-self. The judge held that he was protected pro-tected under the statues. As he still refused to answer, the judge sent him to jail until ho shall answer and pay costs. A few days ago a motion was made before Judge Fanchor, by ex mayor Hall, for a mandamus, decreeing decree-ing Comptroller Bryan to pay Alderman- Monahan his salary as one of the Board of Supervisors of this comity. Judge Fanchcr to-day delivered a lengthy decision, and decided that a mandamus must be granted. |
