Show A SIG.V OF THE TIMES. The New York Herald is an independent inde-pendent paper. That is, it is not bound to any party and speaks as it pleases on political matters. It has been the strongest Mherent of President Presi-dent Grant since his administration commenced, and, indeed, since his name was put up fur the Presidency, of any paper in the Union; and it has been strongly Republican also during the same time. But for a few weeks past there has been a manifest veering around in its political utterances. It has even undertaken to read President Grant a lesson or two, and to tell him that unless he does certain things he will imperil his chances fur re-election. It has also become somewhat Democratic Demo-cratic iu its toue, speaks cucjuragiugly of the late successes of that party, and intimates that more successes are before be-fore the Democrats. Is the public to infer from this that the Horuld views the Democratic party as holding the winning power iu its hands ? And that (he Republican party has lost ground which cannot be rcguiued? It looks something like it; aud the Herald, probably, wishes to be found on the winning side. At any rate, it is one of the political signs of the times, and one that politicians will noto with interest, for tho Herald is keon-soented iu such matters. |
