Show HARMON HAS A HISTORY 1 One of Brighnm Youngs Pioneers Way Back In 1847 Anaconda Standard J B Harmon record and a man with an interesting who claims to be a descendant of illustrious il-lustrious ancestors was arrested last evening on a charge of burglary The police received word several days ago from the Anaconda authorities that a man named J B Harmon was wanted there for the burglary of a hotel and that he was supposed to be in Butte Detective Murphy took charge of the case and informed a friend of liar mons he would like to see him Harmon Har-mon hearing of the fact presented himself him-self to Detective Murphy last evening and was placed under arrest and the Anaconda authorities were notified Pendins the arrival of an officer he is being held at the city orison i Harmon protests his innocence of any crime and says he has not been in Anaconda Ana-conda for nearly three years The suspected man has the appearance of i being a halfbreed being possessed of swarthy features a copper complexion and Ions straight hair that was evidently evi-dently jet black before it began to be streaked with gray He says he is not in the common acceptance oC the word 1 halfbreed although he confesses to having Indian blood in his veins and claims to be a direct descendant of 1 Captain John Smith and Pocohoritas However that may be Harmon undoubtedly un-doubtedly has quite a record He Is a son of J B Harmon who was a member mem-ber of the famous Mormon battalion and emigrated wth his father from Nauvoo Ill to Utah being i Brigham Youngs band of 145 pioneers who crossed the plains from Winter Quarters and made the first settlement in Salt Lake valley July 24 1847 Harmons farther was one of the prominent promi-nent men in that band of pioneers and was among the iirst to enlist in the Mormon battalion Returning to Utah after his service with the battalion the father settled at Centerville about 15 miles north of Salt Lake the placE where the first band of pioneers halted He became an influential citizen among the Mormons and left numerous progeny pro-geny Among them Harmon has several sev-eral welltodo brothers and sisters who are accounted among the highly respected citizens of the Mormon state Harmon was 7 years old when he entered en-tered the valley of Salt Lake with the pioneers and was one of the few survivors sur-vivors of that now famous band who were the honored guests of the semi centennial commission at the Jubilee held at Salt Lake City last July in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the settlement of Utah As an evidence of his genuineness in this connection Harmon wears one of the gold badges presented to the surviving sur-viving pioneers by the commission At an early age Harmon left Utah and went to California and in 1S56 drifted back to Carson City Nev He was at Virginia City during the early gold excitement ex-citement there and came to Montana 14 years ago He is an engineer by profession and has worked in several of the mines here in that capacity In 1S01 Harmon became a sympathizer with the Coxey movement and when an engineer was needed to pull the train which carried General Hogans army east he volunteered his services and pulled the train to Forsythe where it was intercepted by the soldiers sol-diers Harmon has lately been engaged in the tamale business with a Spaniard Span-iard who furnishes the street corner vendors with their supplies He claims he can prove he has not been out of Butte in three months and threatens to bring suit for false imprisonment |
