Show TO THE lAND OF GOLDFinch GOLD-Finch and Donovan in the Klondike I Country I MRS FINCH IS WITH THEM OSTLT WOMAN TO MAKE TH WINTER TRI The Salt Lakers Expect to Be Well Repaid for Their Hardships as Their Early Arrival On the Ground Will Give Them Many Advantages I Ad-vantages I Bacon and beans are a dollar and a I I half a throw That is the price of a meal at Lake Linderman Alaska according to a letter let-ter written by Joe Finch to his brother Harry in this city which was 1 days getting from there here Joe left this city during the later days of October accompanied by his wife They determined to go right on through without waiting for spring I and were having as good a time as any one according to the letter received re-ceived by Harry Finch a few days ago They made the trip over the pass from Dyea and were 12 days in getting their freight and provisions seven miles The next station on from Dyea is Sheep Camp 1C miles distant They made the trip over the pass all right without accident although i is quite a severe trip for a tenderfoot From Sheep Camp to Linderman is 19 miles This according to Finch is a hard trip although right there the heavy work ends The rate charged for packing this 19 miles is 40 cents per pound straight Finch and his party I packed their own stuff and thus saved I the transportation charges At Linderman the party overtook I Captain Donovans party although I Donovan himself had gone on ahead and it was supposed was blazing the trail for his companions They had quite 3 hard time in getting over but were doing all right when Finch found them and were all in good health and spirits Mrs Finch had an experience in crossing Lake Linderman At 10 oclock at night during a snow storm she brolte through the ice and was immersed im-mersed to her neck in the ice cold water but she trudged on and suffered suf-fered no inconvenience from her bath In a postscript to her husbands letter she states that she has gained 12 pounds since she started on the trip and never felt better in her life She contracted no cold from her unexpected bath Finch says there will be a great rush to the diggings in the spring as there are hundreds waiting to go over who did not dare make the venture when he and his party started He thinks he will be the gainer by having gone through in the winter because with Donovan he will be on the ground in the spring while the others are toiling over the passes The letter he sent was brought back to Dyea by one oft of-t e Finch party who came back after moccasins and snow shoes for the ice At the time of closing Finch related that he expected Donovan would be frozen in for a time at the next lake in the chain All have ample stocks of provisions however good warm clothing and no fear is expresed at the result The weather in the interior is not so severe as stated and the snowfall is not heavy enough to impede their passage pas-sage Finch relates that the Dyea trail is the best and urges all who are coming to take it in preference to any other |
