Show BILL RAISING BY A NEGRO I I Successful Work Carried on For Months by an Ignorant Negro Indianapolis Sentinel It isnt always al-ways the sharp shrewd genteel criminal crimi-nal that is the most successful Take for instance the case of George Lind sey of 436 East Pear street Lindsey to all outward appearances is an ignorant ig-norant negro yet he has for six months or more worked a game in this city I that of passing raised billsthat has completely baffled the police He worked in every part of the city and passed scores of 2 bills raised to fives He was arrested last night by Bike Cops Holtz and Wallace and landed in the police station after r hard fight Esveral weeks ago he passed one of the bills on S S Osborn a grocer at North and Liberty streets Last night he went to the same place and attempted to get rid of another one Osborn recognized him and when Lindsey handed him the raised bill he pretended pre-tended that he had no change Osborn told him to wait a minute and he would go out and get the bill changed Lind sey suspected nothing and waited Os born hurried to a telephone and called up the police and when they learned what he wanted they lost no time in getting to the store Lindsey was there when they arrived and the sight of the brass buttons almost drove him wild He fought like a wild man and the oflicers were obliged to use their clubs They could have subdued him easily enough but they did not want to beat him to death and they merely tried to overpower him They struggled with him for fully ten minutes before they succeeded in getting the handcuffs on him and even after he was ironed he I tried to fight them Merchant Policeman Police-man Dave Cleary searched him and found a knife in his pocket The wagon was called and one of the bike cops rode with Lindsey to the station During Dur-ing the ride it was noticed that Lindsey made several attempts to get his right hand in his hip pocket Nothing was thought of it at the time but when the police station was reached and the turnkey found a revolver the reason for his frantic efforts to get to his pocket was made plain Lindsey is evidently a desperate I character and would have stopped at nothing to get away He is 47 years old and a laborer The police say he has passed raised bills on people living in every part of the city The bill he I attempted to pass on Osborn last night was secured by the police The work is very well done and the bill would have been accepted by almost any one I except an expert especially when busy making change and waiting on customers custo-mers In nearly every instance the I bills were passed in the evening when I I they would be less easily detected i |
