Show WH H ITMAN AND WEBSTER I How the Northwest Was Saved to the Union REV BROWS LECTURE TH ARDUOUS JOURNEY 05 OUR THOUSA3TO JOULES Whitmans Passage Through the Salt Lake Valley Tour Years Before Be-fore the Arrival of the Pioneers An Interesting Page of History Marcus Whitman and Daniel Webster Web-ster formed the subject of Rev Clarence Clar-ence T Browns lecture last night at the First Congregational church I was 50 years ago that Marcus Whitman died and the lecture was chiefly a narration nar-ration of the patriotism and heroism by which he saved the great northwest to the United States Rev Brown spoke first of Whitmans perilous ride from Fort Hall after his interview with Captain Grant of the Hudson Bay company to the seat of government at Washington Accompanied Accom-panied by Captain Lovejoy and a guide he started over the pathless mountains deep with snow and the haunt of savages Four years before the arrival here of the pioneers he passed through the Salt Lake valley Several times they were snowbound and at one place the trail was lost and the guide refused to go farther on the journey which he said was an act of madness Undaunted the hardy Whitman Whit-man returned over the dangerous route tie had taken and securing at Fort Un compahgre a new guide made the wondrous journey of 4000 miles to Washington Whitman saw Daniel Webster then secretary of state and the demonstration demonstra-tion of his bear skins and frozen feet were sufficient to convert the great statesman to the patriots idea that Oregon and the northwest comprising 900000 square miles should become apart a-part of the Union Before he heard the plain tale of Whitman Webster had said that he would not give a cent to bring that country an inch nearer Boston Whitmans mission to Washington was successful and when he returned to his far western home it was with 1000 emigrants accompanying him England was told not to lay her hand lower than the present boundaries which separate the Union and the Dominion Do-minion of Canada Whitman did gain the north kingdom for the United States but he was in the critical place at the critical moment and patriotism such as his is what wins countries The sequel to the tory of Marcus Whitmans patriotic deeds is af td one Fifty years ago last Monday night he and his wife were massacred by the Indians whom they had educated and befriended Twelve others lay dead in the snow that night at Walla Walla There was another influence which brought about the treacherous act of the redskins He was hated by the Hudson Bay company and the Jesuits i I and from the time Oregon became an acknowledged part of the Union he was I a marked man An epidemic had spread among the Indians and they were led to believe that Whitman was the cause of it Today Whitman College is a lasting memorial of the glory of his deeds Last week thousands of people saw the unveiling of the monument to Marcus Whitman and his wife Future generations gen-erations will remember that he went to the distant northwest with the cross in one hand and deemed it no sacrilege to carry the flag in the other |
