Show COMMENTS BY THE PRESS A Handsome Present It was a handsome New Years present which the Unlted States made to Utah In admitting it to an equal place in the noble sisterhood of sommonwealths New York Tribune The Utah Senators In Salt Lake City last night the Hon Frank J Cannon and Arthur Brown were nominated by the Republican caucus cau-cus for the United fatatea senate This selection is one that is significant of the continuation of the Mormon power but it is not necessarily therefore an ill omen for the new state Mr Cannon who is the son of the prominent Mormon George y Cannon represents the new era He is a man who will make his mark in Washington for he is a finely educated edu-cated man a broad thinker and an orator ora-tor of more than ordinary talent He is young and progressive and is not in sympathy with polygamy although he is heid to the Mormon church by many ties He has been one of the most untir inc advocates of statehood and has been for several years most conspicuous in tho Republican party Arthur Brown who went to Utah from Michigan also stands for Mormon interests in-terests for he has been the attorney ot the church in many important cases and has commanded the confidence of the men who have control of the tremendous tre-mendous machinery of that body which holds the balance of political power Next to the choice of a Mormon Mr Brown will be the most acceptable candidate candi-date that could be put before the adherents ad-herents of the church Both these men pqssess conspicuous ability and will uphold the free silver standard Doubtless they will be able to show that they represent the whole state and not a faction In his inaugural speech Governor Wells who Is a son of one of tho most noted of tho Mormon bishops and polygamists defined the position of the Mormons of today They are no longer Mormons first but citizens citi-zens of Utah and from the ruins of ignoble ig-noble customs and instlutions a most worthy people will rise Today the Mormons Mor-mons have a fair promise of future honors They possess a power that if used right will make their state a brilliant bril-liant ornament to the great republic If however the church is maintained as apolitical a-political machine there are serious difficulties diffi-culties to be encountered and the devel ooinent of one of the richest regions In the whole country will be retarded Utahs future is a grave trust that the Mormon powers hold It is to be hoped that wisdom and justice will triumph over self Interest and church Influence Denver Times |
