Show CUBANS CLOSING m ON HAVANA Continued from Page 1 CUBAN QUESTION I CONGRESS Strong Sentiment Favorable to Immediate Im-mediate Recognition WASHINGTON Jan 16The question ques-tion of recognizing the belligerency of the Cuban insurgents absorbed the time of the house foreign committee at its meeting today There exists astron a-stron sentiment in congress favorable to immediate recognition of the revolution revo-lution and the leaders of this sent I ment are very active although It is not yet demonstrated whether they represent a majority of the house majoriy te I Some dissatisfaction was expressed because the state department a not yet furnished the committee the information I infor-mation in Its possession upon the sta tus and progress of the war In Cuba I About two weeks ago the house adopted I adop-ted a resolution calling 4 > n the secr i tary of stata to forward 1 the evidence I evi-dence in the case in his possession This resolution has been reinforced byte by-te request of the committee Particular Particu-lar request has been made for the < reports and letters to the department by ConsulGeneral Williams at Havana Ha-vana and the United States consuls in Cuba The committee is having an I exchange of views upon the Cuban question A majority of the commit recommended deliberation The conservative position Is taken bv the members of the subcommltt Messrs Adams Draper and Hitt who have char e of the Cuban question The net result of the meeting was an agreement to intimate to the stat department that the committee is waiting solitiously for the information in its possession In Defiance of Press Censor HAVANA Jan 16 There was considerable con-siderable excited comment yesterday and today over the wording of an editorial ed-itorial article which appeared In the Diaro de La Marina yesterday containing con-taining some sensational statements and headed An Unbearable Situation The article declared frankly and in defiance of the press censor that the time has come for the government officials offi-cials to admit that the situation is serious ser-ious and entreated the government to change is present policy and if necs sary to put more men on the field claiming that the revolution is annihilating annihi-lating the commerce and industries of the Island The severity shown to those who ex uress dissatisfaction with the situation does not avail to suppress this feeing and the mutterines of discontent and of criticism of the helpless attitude of th authorities becomes daily louder ani depDer r The Union Constitutional the Reforn 1st and the Conservative parties today announced that their declined longer to support Martinez Campos in his poli < y of the conduct of the campaign against the insurgents There was a great manifestation of the Denoles sentiment today and aT sooke freely and frankly A feeling of intense excitement pervades the city The organ of the tonomlsts express sea its adherence to the views expressed by representatives of other political parties par-ties and Martnfez Campos is apparently without political friends or support in Cuba Todays outbreak is not of a sort that ran be silenced and there Is every indication In-dication that it puts an end of Ma tinez Cameos power for usefulness to the Snanlsh cause I Srck < went rfnwn in Havana today and there is a feeling of panic |
