Show i FOUGHT BY A P AS I domination of General Copplnper Before the Senate I WASHINGTON Jan 16Senator Hale made an argument before the j senate committee on military affairs today in favor of the confirmation oft I of-t e nomination i jof General Coppinger to b brigadiergeneral He said that General Coppinger had served through I the war a a officer had fought In thirtyone battles and had been wounded in two He produce the I original letter of recommendation to the governor of Connecticut written I by General Custer and endorsed by Geniral Sheridan recommending in I strong terms the promotion of Mr I Coppinger then a captain to the I colonelcy of one of the Connecticut regiments Senator Hale said the delay i i de-lay on the part of General Coppinger in taking out his naturalization papers I was due to the fact that he had an interest in the entail df an estate in Ireland which he was advised by j prominent Americans including Mr I Blaine might be endangered by his i becoming a citizen of this country He called attention to the fact that I Coppinger had been commissioned several times and had taken the oath I of allegiance on all such occasions He accounted for the generals participation participa-tion in the civil conflict in Italy when a young man by saying that he was a professional soldier The committee adjourned without passing upon the nomination which is being fought by the A P As |
