SHIP SAMARIA is LOST Little Doubt But She Has Gone to the Bottom NOW MANY DAYS UVERDUE SHOULD HAVE ARRIVED AT I OTD IV S FRISCO ON APRIL 2 Story Told by the Captain of the Ship Alcade Which Left Seattle at the Same Time a Did the Samaria Terrific Gale Partially Overcome by the Use of Oil Bags A Very Narrow Escape San Francisco April 15The impression im-pression that the American ship Samaria Sa-maria from Seattle for San Francisco coalladen has gone to the bottom I grows stronger day by day a no j tidings come from the overdue vessel I The Alcade which left Seattle simultaneously simul-taneously with the Samaria arrived in this port April 2 The Alcades master I says that on March 25 he encountered I a terrible southeast gale and after being in company with the Samaria four days the vessels unintentionally I separated The Alcade took in her sails but the Samaria did not reef her I canvas The Samaria was laden so deeply in the water that the seas broke over her and she wallowed badly in the trough of the sea The Alcade had hard work saving herself and only escaped es-caped from the fury of the storm by throwing out oil bags which moderated the force of the sea immediately about her On the following day the wind moderated but there was no sign of the Samaria Much wreckage was j drifting about and the Alcades officers i saw a set of ships steps and a corpse j tangled in a mass of ropes which i drifted astern The Alcades captain is j I confident that the Samaria and all her I crew are at the bottom of the sea
