| Show CHANDLERS FRANKENSTEIN The creation of Frankensteins by individuals in-dividuals or governments is ever an unwise thing They have such an ugly way of growing to be greater than their creators and so become first a terror ter-ror and then a menace to them Senator Sen-ator Chandler has come to the conclusion con-clusion that the Carnegie and Bethlehem Bethle-hem companies are of the genus Frankenstein Frank-enstein He seemingly forgets how they were fashioned and on what they were nourished The New Hampshire man speaks of these companies thus The Carnegie and the Bethlehem Steel company have formed a big monopoly mo-nopoly to control the manufacture and sale of armor plate The former has put in 8000000 or 10000000 and the latter about 15000000 and they have acted most arrogantly and foolishly The right of the government to take these works by compensating the owners own-ers is constitutional and perfectly clear The Carnegie and the Bethlehem Bethle-hem companies stand off and defy the government and demand their price for armor We cant have three battleships battle-ships standing without armor and be arrogantly told by these people that we cant have their armor so the best thing for us to do is to make our own armor How like a boy the senator talks These Companies have acted most arrogantly ar-rogantly towards the government It may be but if they have who taught r > < If = I ir l r I them arrogance If they have grown so great and act like Caesar all know where the meat upon which they have fed comes from And has not Senator Chandler insisted that all the people shall trade at the very same shop where these arrogant companies have gone for their meat They have got it at the Home Market of course and the Home Market furnishes nothing but stallfed beef The senator says that these companies stand off and defy the government ard demand their price for their armor What is protection pro-tection for but to allow those who get the benefit of it to demand their own I price for their products If protection is patriotic it must be conceded that I I it is patriotic to take advantage of the I opportunities that protection offers To relieve Uncle Sam poor dear Uncle Samuel who at times gives evidences I of being in his dotage of the dilemma in which he has placed himself Senator Sen-ator Chandler would have him confiscate con-fiscate the property of these companies I though it seems never to have occurred to him that the easiest way in the I world out of it is to let foreigners compete com-pete when armor plate is wanted The senator is entitled to no sympathy sym-pathy for if these companies have become be-come a Frankenstein to him and others it must be remembered that he helped to create them And some are even anxious to create the mate that the giant so much desires that the race may be increased Heaven forbid |
