| Show MAJOR ISLEY HBR 1 Vfl Is the New Commander aftf iort y Duchesne HE SUCCEEDS COL RANDLETT AS INDIAN AGENT Considerable Difficulty Encountered in the Selection of a Commander For the Isolated Port Major Isle Is-le Will Bring One Troop of Cavalry Cav-alry to Salt Lake on a Practice STarch Major Charles S Isley commanding the Dost at Fort Duchesne Utah arrived ar-rived several days ago from Washington Washing-ton where he received orders from the war department to assume the duties of Indian agent for the Uintah reservation reserva-tion in addition to the military supervision super-vision devolving upon him by virtue of his rank Major Isley relieved Lieu tenantColonel Randlett of the Du chesne command last December when that officer was retired on the age limit but at the time Colonel Randlett did not have the irksome position of Indian agent lifted from his shoulders i since he will have served in that capacity capac-ity from the date of his retirement from active army service until Major Isley reaches the post with his credentials creden-tials as Indian agent from the secretary of the interior e The army headquarters has encountered encount-ered much difficulty in the selection of f some officer to fill the position of Indian In-dian asent for the reason that the N place is not a desirable one from the standpoint of army life and in connection connec-tion with this fact is the lack of any compulsory motive on the part of the government to force the job on a member mem-ber of the army corps It has been the custom to consult an officer as to his readiness to accept the extra responsibility respon-sibility which involves the double duty of reporting to the army headquarters on pure military matters and to the interior department on all subjects affecting af-fecting Indian affairs Major Isley however having consented con-sented to combine his duties he is now en route to perform the appointment Some degree of local interest attaches to the garrison of Fort Duchesne because be-cause of a contemplated overland practice prac-tice march which It is intended shall bring one troop of the Ninth cavalry to Salt Lake City some time next July Major Isley will lead one of his two troops from the post across the intervening inter-vening country in accordance with an established usage The troop will probably prob-ably camp in or near the city for several sev-eral days preparatory to its return by the same route The event will be an Innovation as no body of government troops on practice have ever entered the city before When the bill for the opening of the Uncompahgre reservation for mineral entry passes the house it will become Major Isleys business to remove the Uncompahgres from their present confines con-fines to the Uintah agency an act demanding de-manding no little tact and any quantity quan-tity of patience |
