A FAMOUS OLD CASE The death of Mrs Elizabeth R Til ton in Brooklyn will revive the memory of a scandal that was nationwide near a quarter of a century ago in which the great Beecher the brilliant Tilton I and others figured prominently The account ac-count of the trial filled the newspapers for weeks and weeks and public opinion opin-ion was very much divided as to the guilt or Innocence of the defendant in the case Certain it is that when it was all over he had lost much prestige Nor was he ever again held In the same estimation that he had been prior to the notorious trial in which he was so prominent a figure Such trials almost invariably leave some very black spots on the characters of those who pass through them It did In this case Theodore The-odore Tilton is living in Paris but so quietly that very few know of his existence ex-istence When such scandals as the BeecherTilton case which engaged the public attention for so many months almost years pass from memory and become a part of the forgotten past it is a matter of congratulation Mrs Tiltonhas gone to her final accounting and whether guilty or innocent in this world her punishment was great and of lone duration
