| Show ARBOR DAY IN ZM S The Public Offices and Banks Were Closed STATE OFFICIALS PLANT TREES ON CAPITOL HILL No General Observance of the Day Business Carried on as Usual Exercises Held at the Public Schools s S S Except for the announcements in the papers the general public would never have known that yesterday was a legal I holiday The state county and municipal offices I of-fices were closed while the courts suspended I sus-pended business and the capitol building build-ing was almost deserted but up town business went along as usual only the banks being closed It was ideal Arbor day weather however and some tree planting was done although even this custom was not so generaly followed as in past years PLANTED CHESTNUT TREES The day was duly obsered by the state officials yesterday At 11 oclock in the morning Governor Wells Secretary Secre-tary of State Hammond AttorneyGen eral Bishop Auditor Richards and Treasurer Chipman assembled at the capitol grounds on the hill and each proceeded to plant an American chestnut chest-nut tree Everything was informal and it would be difficult to say which of the five would make the most successful nurseryman I The day was observed in the public schools in accordance with suggestions made by the board of education II OQUIRRH SCHOOL At 945 p m the pupils of the Oquirrh I school marched to the grounds where they proceeded to celebrate Arbor day I They were grouped on either side of the main entrance in such a manner I that the smaller people had the front positions I I As the full orchestra which was stationed sta-tioned in the entrance struck un the familiar tune of America and the voices of the whole school rang out I upon the air the audience could not help being impressed with the beauty I of such occasions I Later in the programme the pupils of I j room 1 who had an elevated position I in the center of the lawn sang a pretty little school song so nicely that they received II re-ceived much applause The other exercises I ex-ercises consisted of quotations about I birds and trees and two selections by I the school orchestra one of which I The High School Cadets Patrol was very taking Miss Lola Cochler pianist I pian-ist and Miss Jessie Areimer violinist I seem to be the leading spirits of the organization I I or-ganization I AT JACKSON SCHOOL I The feature of the exercises at Jackson Jack-son school was an address by Professor Vvrhiting of the university who spoke I to the 600 children on birds and trees The pupils gave recitations and sang songs the teachers assisting in making the programme an interesting one AT FREMONT SCHOOL I The exercises of the Fremont school I I were held on the school grounds and I consisted of recitations compositions I I I vocal and instrumental music and the planting of the class tree by the eighth I grade S The programme was carried out as I announced and was well received by those present I The schoolrooms were appropriately decorated with the work of the pupils i consisting of maps charts drawings I compositions and blackboard work I The color work in room 9 representing I I represent-ing birds animals and plants was especially es-pecially deserving of comment |
